Question about 1993 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

We have a 1993 Pontiac Grand AM SE with the 3.3 L V6 engine, automatic trans, power windows and door locks. The engine temp is running hot. I have replaced the cooling fans, fan switch sensor, relay, temp sensor and cap. The guage goes into the red, biut the temp light never comes on. The cooling fan only comes on if you turn the AC on. Fan never comes on except when your turn AC on. Coolant has been flushed, not lease from radiator or watter pump. No blown head gasket, did compression check. No water in oil.

is the engine fan coming on? , when the heads were removed ,were they pressure tested. u may need to use a carbon block test from the coolant tank. the liquid will turn a different color if exhaust gas is present in the coolant, which would be a internal problem

If the port is not full how do you know when not to add anymore trans fluid

In an automatic transmission while the engine is running in park check the dipstick after the vehicle has reached normal operating temp. There is a mark for cold and hot. Since the fluid expands with high temps always check when hot to ensure you wouldn't add any excess fluid if you needed to add some as overfilling it would cause premature failure and expensive repairs

Firing order for a 97 pontiac grand am se

For the 1997 Pontiac Grand Am:
I do not know if you have the 2.4L DOHC In-Line 4-Cylinder or the 3.1L V6. However I have included both below. I suspect based on the SE Model you have the 3.1L V6.

For the 2.4L DOHC In-Line 4-Cylinder:
Firing Order:
1-3-4-2
Cylinders:
..........(back).........
|...1....2....3....4...|
..........(front)

For the 3.1L V6:
Firing Order:
1-2-3-4-5-6
Cylinders:
......(back)........
|...1....3....5...|
_____________
|...2....4....6...|
......(front)
Ignition Coil Connections
_____..____...____
|..O..|..|..O..|..|..O..|
|.5..2|..|.3..6|..|.4..1|

Let me know if this helped.....

The only thing that you can do is check the trans fluid.Start car,run it through all gears and end in neutral.Handbrake on.Now check the trans fluid level.Make sure engine is warm.If needed add fluid. If this is not the problem,a tranny expert is the go.There is not a lot anyone can do with an auto trans at home.Hope this helps
