Question about 1986 Volvo DL

Open Question

I am replacing the heater fan motor in my 1986 Volvo 240 DL. The old motor had a black and red wire, whereas the new VDO motor comes with a resistor and switch, and is more complex to install. I want to get electrical instructions in the simplist terms on how to install the new motor. Thank you.

I had more or less the same problem. It would only happen when the engine was cold. According to the mechanic, the fuel pump was going bad. After replacing it, I havent had it happen to me again, granted its only been a couple of days since I changed it.

SOURCE: starting a 1984 240 DL Volvo wagon after sitting in a garage for 5 years

Replace engine oil and filter, air filter and fuel filter.
Drain the fuel tank and add fresh fuel.
Remove the spark plugs and put a squirt of oil in each cylinder. Remove coil lead and crank engine until oil pressure comes up.(light goes out),
replace coil lead and start engine.. it will blow smoke for first few minutes. Check trans fluid, brake fluid etc before driving. Theres a good chance the brakes will need an overhaul.

than next would be to release the cable from the transmission lever usually a pin or screw or clip is all that hols them on than fallow the cable to the pedal inside and un clip it the hardest part would be the adjustment you just have to adjust till it feels fine and shift smooth than your done good luck

I would look for the supply to the blower motor. If you have supply on the motor, the motor is probably faulty, if not look for the reason why no supply is there.

Question:If the 30 A. fuse on a 2002 focus dash blower motor is good,and the thermal resistor is replaced, then it must be a faulty speed switch?

Don't know where you got your info . The heater blower motor electrical B+ power comes from Fuse F 64 a 40 amp fuse . This goes right to the blower motor on the green with orange stripe wire , The black with red stripe wire goes to the switch for high speed . There is Splice 24 that ties into the black with red stripe wire. The splice 24 turns into a black with orange stripe wire . An this wire goes to the blower motor resistor . All the switch does is route the B+ voltage through the different resistors to ground .

Thermal resistor "usually" stops working is because of faulty fan speed switch ???? Totally not true , resistor assemblies fail because of the heat associated with dropping voltage across the resistors , That is why they put the resistor assembly in the air box . Air blows over to cool the resistors . The switch is nothing more then a way to direct different speeds to ground .

Rather then listening to other people ,why not learn the right way to test electrical circuits .

Volvo 240 has heat but won't blow it out it leaks out any tips

It sounds like the fan is not turning. Did the fan motor make a lot of noise before it stopped? If it sounded normal and first lost one speed and then lost the other speeds, the problem is the resistor that sets the fan speeds. The resistor costs about $55 on line. It is a thumb-sized cylinder with four wires attached along the side. It is likely green in color. Search the forum Brickboard for details.
If the fan has been noisy for a while, and lost all speeds at once, the fan motor may have failed. This will be a lot more work to fix. Again, however, there is a lot of information on the Brickboard, along with links to private web pages where they describe how to replace the fan.

it sounds like your throttle positioning sensor unplug it see what happens if nothing changes there you go.

Heater Fan Quit working without warning no smoke no blown fuse.

Oh no, say it isn't so. I'm in the middle of the same task on my 85 model. I just got my parts from IPD, which I hope is not the source of your parts. I would start with the fuses and check for a blown one. Make sure you check closely as they can have fine cracks that can get missed.

Any chance you have a loose wire? - with all that have to come out for the repair it's possible you lost a groundwire connection.

Write back as I will have questions of my own on how you got yours put back together.
