I have a gas leak from the top of my tank. Is dropping the tank the only way to access my gas tank at the top to see what the problem is?

Yes, unless you can see the hookups from the front of the tank. You can probably get by with just dropping it a little. Leak is probably a bad hose.

SOURCE: Gas leaking out where you fill the front tank

You probably have a defective fuel-tank selector valve. Its located on the left frame rail, halfway down. While the vehicle is running, tank"A" is pumping fuel to the engine, while tank "B" is getting the unneeded fuel that is returning from the engine. Thats why it is overflowing.

SOURCE: gas leaking from tank

This sounds like you have a leak at the fuel pump and sender unit, either in the unit mount or in a fuel line. Check under your back seat for an access panel if you have one then remove it and look at the pump and sender mount to see what is leaking, you may have to start the engine to get it to leak as it may only leak under pressure, hope this helps, let me know

SOURCE: gas tank leaks when filled

To fix the gas gauge, replace the fuel sending unit located inside the gas tank. To install a filler hose, clamp the end of the new filler hose to the gas tank. Use a new hose clamp to ensure the hose is secure on the pipe. Tighten the bracket to the hose to secure it against the frame. Tighten the bracket with a socket wrench and push the end of the hose through the gas door. Secure it in place by tightening the three screws with a phillips head screwdriver. Test the hose by pouring gasoline into it. Crawl under the vehicle to observe and check for leaks.

When filling up the gas tank of my 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, it releabsed a few cups of gasoline from somewhere at the bottom of the car. I'm not sure why??? It hasn't leaked since.

Both the fuel pump and gas gage sending units are located inside the tank. They are accessed by a plate and gasket on top of the fuel tank.
If the gasket leaks or the hoses leading to the vent leak, your condition would happen. Unfortunately to confirm the tank would have to be dropped(removed) which requires all the fuel to be removed first. Not a pleasant nor easy task.

It may just be the fuel pump seal at the top of the tank. it has to be dropped for a definite diagnosis. It is rare but the tank seams occasionally crack too. Good luck.

Fuel line corrosian and leaking at the gas tank. Is there a line set to replace and best way to get to top of the tank

The tank has to be dropped to gain access to the top of it. You may be able to find preformed lines available from a manufacture like Dorman at a local parts store. Ford may actually still have the lines available, but being 18 years old there's no guarantee.

Sorry. Got to drop the tank. Just break the gas tank bolts and replace them with new ones. If the straps are badly rusted, replace them, too. Look for tank leaks on the top of the tank. Replace the sock on the fuel pump.

Fuel leaking from top of gas tank

sounds like you are going to have to drop the tank out to inspect and fix. with luck it will be leaking from the fuel pump seal or the return line.
Bad luck would be if the tank is rusted out and needs to be replaced.
Syphon as much gas out of the tank as you can before you drop it , gas is heavy.

Front gas tank leaked when I filled the tank

the top of the tank has an opening where the gas guage sending unit is installed. The gasket can give out and it can leak when the tank is completely full, but won't necessarily show signs of leakage when the tank is partially full.
Requires dropping the tank and changing the gasket... hope this helps.

Monster fuel leak

if the gas is leaking from the top of the tank, 10 to 1 it's either the fuel line, or the top part of the sending unit which is probably made of plastic, is cracked where the fuel line connects to.The tank should be empty or near it, easier to drop, loosen the tank strap bolts towards the front, then remove the rear ones one at a time, as you take the last rear bolt out, the tank should drop a little. Becarful of the wire connection and fuel line, drop it slowly enough to reach in and disconnect them.If the unit has a plastic hose connection, it needs replacing. good luck.
