If the key is released and car dies. Then the ignition switch, and ignition lock module needs to be checked. You can check out this with meter It should be 12 volts. Also check the connection of battery to the ignition module.Check and keep updated.Thanks.

Car starts but dies when key is released ?

I would start by replacing the ignition switch. That's the easiest and cheapest option to start with.

89 jeep wrangler was carburated now has a Howell throttle body injection kit (kit was installed years ago) jeep has sat for 10 years now it will start but will not stay running without holding the key in...

check the ballast resistor near the coil. white thing with wires...

run a wire from the +battery to the +coil and test (no more than 30 seconds)
if it works, replace the ballast resistor.
ballast should have 12v on one side and 7v on the other side with the ignition on.

Runs while key is being held on. as soon as you release key to driving derections. jeep stop runing. can any one help me.

I don't quite understand what you mean by be held on. Normally you "hold on" to the key to start it and let it go back to the on position. If you have to hold the key on (start position) then you can might not be starting. The starter is turning the engine, but the engine not running? What happens when you give it gas?

1999 v70 wagon 2.4t starts, as soon as you release the key it dies.and sometimes it just cranks. had a halo installed no help. any help

This sounds like a ignition problem, check the ignition switch. see if it looses power when the key is released, also if it just cranks then it may just die when the key is let go for another reason than the switch, but i would start with the switch first.

See if you can hear your fuel pump go on when you first turn your key if not replace it. It should have a humming noise when you first turn your key.

My car wont stay running

Does the engine die as soon as you release the key, or does it run for a couple of seconds after you release the key and then die? If it dies as soon as you release the key, try holding the key for a few seconds and see if it will stay running as long as you are holding the key (the starter will make a grinding sound while holding the key but won't hurt anything). If it stays running while you hold the key then dies when you release it, that indicates that the ignition switch is bad.
