HI, can you give me alittle more information about your car. Does it make these sounds if your sitting still and just turning the wheel? When it doesnt want to turn is the steering wheel just stiff and then jerks free and turns?

yep. doesn't happen when sitting still. only when i start to turn. yes, it jerks then turns. it doesn't happen all the time though. thanks for your help.

Ok, that helps well these cars are known for the control arms bushings to collapse and and let the controlarm make contact witht he craddle this causes the clunking noise. it can also attribute to the hard to turn condition but this is usually caused by a rack and pinion. Hope this helps good luck

Front end clunking noise

Take the brakes apart & clean up all rust, check everything out
& lube things when putting back together
Have to do that at least once a year

Don't need machining every year or new pads, but have to knock
down the edge on the rotors & get rid of rust & lube (anti-seize on
everything but inside the caliper slide bolts, there you use the synthetic caliper lube

The clunk could be worn drive axle joints or drive shaft joints
or shocks
When your on the brakes or hit bumps your loading things differently & the clunk goes away

Clunk when breaking

Can be several things. Often a sticking brake caliper or worn brake pads can clunk. Sometimes the transmission can clunk when the Torque converter unlocks. A bad U-joint can clunk when the brakes start slowing the rotation of the differential.

Someone needs to check the brakes and driveline.

many things could go wrong in the front end ,possible things too check are upper strut mounts, ball joints, broken coils, these are just a few things that can bang clunk and possibly make it hard too turn, unless the whole rack n pinon is bad,

Struts noise?

I would tend to believe it's more likely a worn sway bar bushing or link if it's a rattle or a small clunk, if it's a loud clunk probably a strut, try bouncing he back of the car when parked, if you get the clunk probably a strut if only when driving, turning, braking probably just a bushing on the sway bar

Take your vehilce to a new mechanic which specializes in vehicle alignment. Make sure they check your braking system for bad brake pads or faulty brake spring systems. Also check for alignment tie-rods out of alignment. This could cause a clunking sound when going over hills on a turn, or bumps in a turn.

I am hearing a clunk when breaking with in town driving..not all the time. Took to repair shop, put on new struts in front. Still hearing the clunk occasionally.

It sounds like a cv joint noise how dose the steering wheel feel dos it shake side to side when brakeing truthfuly im not that formilar with your car but its a front end problem. New struts would help but not completly elimitate it. Im not sure if the engine is inverted on your vehicle is it front wheel drive if so its likely cv joints

Did they replace entire strut & spring assy, with new, or just do struts? Feel where spring of strut sits on strut base at bottom & see if you can feel piece of thin rubber between spring & base of strut, or if spring is up against the edge of the base (seat). Sometimes I've seen the rubber between them move and cause spring to rub up against the seat or base of strut, (meatl on metal) especially when turning.

Grinding noise when I pull off and clunking noise on bumps

Front hub bearing. If you were the one who replaced the pads you should have turned the hub while the caliper was off and checked for roughness or wobble. Imagine the rotor wandering from side to side and rubbing the pads; thats what a worn hub will do.

87 Audi Coupe - Clunking Noise

the car is aging

there are other bushings and ball joints to make noises at that speed

the top rubber mounts failed for a reason

if i were on that job i would have replaced both gas struts
at the same time....

not much structure to the top strut mounts
