Question about 2005 Ford F-150

1 Answer

My 05 F-150 Lariat cranks but won't start. It has happened to me a few times previously and I just let it set for a couple of hours and then it will start right up. When it first started I put in a new fuel filter, but it happened again a few days later. I used my scan tool but there aren't any codes stored. What could be causing this issue? Good place to start looking?

When I turn the key on I can hear the fuel pump making a clicking type sound. Doesn't sound like it is running correctly, or at all for that matter.

I don't see the fuel rail test port to test the fuel pressure. Any idea on where I can find a picture of it's location?

Do you have fuel pressure cranking?
Can you actuate the pump with the scanner?
Need a wiring schematic,so you can walk down the issues. Relay, Pump Module if have one.
Sounds like a pump binding up mechanically.

The next time this happens have a can of spray starting fluid handy (available from any hardware or auto parts store), spray it into the air intake of the engine if it starts you most likely have a sticking in tank electric fuel pump problem.

Check fuel pressure at the injector rail. If good, suspect crankshaft position sensor--when it fails to start, check for sparks by pulling an ignition wire off the coils and holding it close to the coil with an insulated tool while someone cranks the engine. If no sparks, replace the sensor.

Its not the oil, increasing temperature will thin out the oil. If it cranks easily but won't start it could be the spark plugs or the spark plug wires. When they heat up, especially if they are old, they won't perform well. Pull off one of the wires and hold it close to the plug, try to crank the engine and look for a spark. If it sparks them try removing a plug and check to see if it looks wet. If its bone dry it might not be getting fuel.

i know on the 99 mountaineers with the 5.0 the way the fuel lines were routed from the factory, heat from the motor would vaporize the fuel in the lines when engine was cut off warm. It would turn quite a few times before starting after that happened. try turning your key on and off a couple of times before you actually try starting it and it should start quicker. I know this from experience.

if the car just wine's when starting like it would normally and nothng is happening...Check for fuel, either find the fuel pressure relief valve near the rear of the engine, and depress the valve stem (fuel should hit the roof of hood) if not then its a fuel problem, try this a couple times, but turning the key over, and listen for noise from the gas t ank to see if the pump is actuating.. if you hear the noise while just turn the keyy to acc, not start plz comment back that you hear it , but its still doesnt start....
hope this fix's-ya!
