You have blown a head gasket. Take out each sparkplug, the one that looks different is the cylinder that the water is going through. You can remove just the head with the problem, get the head worked and install a new gasket or you can do both heads. The cylinder wall should be checked for scoring where the coolant washed away the lubricant, the pan should be removed to look at the main bearings and clean out the oil pump or replace it too.

Hi, the problem you are having is with the cylinder head gasket and it sounds like its quite bad so the chances are the head will need skimming and testing to see if it has a crack in it.

if your doing this yourself you will need to get a workshop manual as the head bolts have to be undone in a certain order and the same when you do them up and you also need to tighten them up to correct torque settings.

this is a very big job and will need a few days to get sorted and the head will need sending off to be machined.

let me know if you need further assistance.

give me a shout back if you need anything og

Oil in coolant resvoir

Not good! The coolant and lubricant in the engine should never come in contact with each other.

Check the oil dipstick - if it is white / foamy white - is indication of coolant entering the crankcase and mixing with the oil. This can happen if the engine block has cracked or head gasket is torn / damaged.

After the engine has been running / warmed up completely (you get full heat from the heater or thermostat indicates in the normal range), look at the tailpipe. There should be no visible "smoke." If you see white "smoke" it is probably coolant in the form of steam / water vapor and confirms the crack / head gasket issue. Low coolant / oil levels can also indicate this.

Neither problem is an inexpensive repair - but the a cracked block is usually the "point of no return" that few will fix unless the car is in great shape, low miles, etc.

Blowing white smoke

white smoke is caused by-- water or anti-freeze entering cylinder . if in radiator or the overflow tank. it will look like a chocolate milk shake. check on oil dipstick for traces of water or anti-freeze. also, a bad head gasket will let water or anti-freeze in combustion area. head gasket symtoms if bad. Symptom #1: Chronic Engine Overheating
Symptom #2: Significant Drop in Coolant Level Symptom #3: Mixing of Coolant and Engine Oil
Symptom #4: White Smoke from Exhaust Pipe

popping of overflow cap Symptom #6: Air Bubbles in Radiator
Symptom #7: Engine Lacks Power GOOD-DAY!

Coolant light keeps coming on every couple of weeks and the resivour is empty. I fill it up and it drains again, but have no idea of where it is going. New radiator a year ago, new thermostat and radiator...

Usually coolant have special markers which shine in UV light, so you can take an uv lamp and check for leaks.
Also check oil level and color (it shouldn't be white, if so coolant - runs into oil, serious repair needed)
Also their should be no white smoke (more or less) from exhaust pipe.. if there is - the gasket is damaged and repair is needed.

In conclusion - there are three ways to loose coolant: leakage, leakage to oil, leakage to combustion chamber.

There is white smoke coming out the tailpipe no smell of antifreeze

If it doesn't smell like sweet then you most likely got a bad tank of gas. Just to be safe keep an eye on your engine temp. and coolant levels.

Where is my head gasketsand what do i have to remove to get to them on my 2000 chevy malibu 3.1l

on top of the block under the head...but before you do that make sure it really is your head gasket that is bad. something that happens in all of these cars and many others that used this engine is lower intake manifold gasket failure. LIM gasket failure can have the same symptoms as head gasket failure (internal and/or external coolant leakage, coolant in oil, white smoke in exhaust, foam at oil filler cap) make sure you have this checked first becuase this gasket is easier to fix than head gaskets because you don't need to dig as far into the engine.

Smoke and water from tailpipe

That white color is a tell tale sign of a bad head gasket, when the head gasket goes your coolant mixes with your oil and the burns off causing the white smoke. I hate to give bad news but it's not cheap or easy to replace.

Hope this helps
