Question about 1997 Saturn SL

Open Question

Can a bad idler pulley on a 1997 Saturn cause a plastic like rattling sound when in gear. At idle there is no sound, only in gear. The belt tensioner seems to be in good shape. I replaced the top engine mount because it was the original. The bottom engine mount seems to be newer, the one located under the battery. I need to get it fixed, but when I call an auto repair shop, they want to charge almost more than the car is worth, and I cant afford right now.

It might be best to remove the power steering pump and bracket, then pry engine away from passenger side. That should give you enough room.

Obviously one of the pulleys is loose or the tensioner is faulty.
I would check all of the pulleys before trying to put the belt back on.
You should find a bad bearing or broken spring.

Could be your idler pulley bearings are going bad. They do make a rattling sound when bad and they are a known common problem with Chrysler vehicles.

Sometimes the idler pulley can begin to rattle a bit, the noise is most often associated with the the idle pulley damper mounts. Just a tiny movement here can cause that audible clicking. It does not harm the engine and can usually be heard only at idle so if yo can live with it, great.

these cars are common for the automatic serpentine belt tensioner breaking down, causing an almost plastic like rattle. the fact that it gets worse in gear and with the A/C on confirms this suspicion. buy a quality brand name, such as a delco, or else you are asking for more problems. avoid the goodyear brand. good luck!

Loose serpitine belt on my saturn wagon

needs a new belt tentioner. it will run you from between $60-$80 depending on where you go. but thats the only thing that would cause your belt to be loose. while the belt is off i would check all the pulleys for "play" by trying to wiggle them, if the wiggle they need to be replaced as well, its common on saturns for the belt tentioner and idler pulley to go together.

One of the pulleys is not turning. Could be AC, alternator, or one of the idler pulleys.Take a careful look with a good light. My bet is the idler pulley.
