Question about 1991 Ford F150

1 Answer

1991 F-150, 302 V-8, 5.0L acts like it has a vapor lock. Fuel injected so can't be vapor lock. After driving a while when I push on the gas there is no power. The engine starts to shake and chug like it isn't getting any fuel. I pull over to stop, let the truck sit for a couple of hours, the engine will fire right up. I have replaced the ignition coil, spark plugs, wires, dist cap, fuel filter, cleaned the throttle body. Flushed the cooling system and replaced the antifreeze. Seems to happen more on hot days too. Tried injector cleaner and super premium gas. Duel gas tanks. Doesn't matter which tank I'm running.. Also, it may be related, idle fluctuates anywhere from 1000 to 600 when sitting.

It does seem like you have done a fair bit of work on this beast...just curious to see whether you had performed a cylinder head pressure test....???? If it is happpening more on hot days, it might be wise to check it whilst the engine is hot, i am suspecting a head gasket or head problem ???.....

What makes it vapor lock

If it is a gas engine, its almost impossible to get vapor lock.
Vapor lock is when liquid gasoline turns to a vapor which will not flow thru a carburetor. The usual cause was hot fuel lines going to the carb.
Since the early 1980s engines have used fuel injection which uses liquid fuel under pressure.

fuel injected car do not get vapor lock, check you fuel pressure,if it is OK (with in spec) pull the vacuum line from fuel pressure regulator if it is wet (gas in it) then you need a regulator as the diaphragm is ruptured ,also bad T.P.S (thrittle position sensor) can cause the same sympton

It could be vapor locking if you drive for a while then it acts like it is running out of gas. this is caused by the fuel vaporizing before it gets to te carburator. Check the fuel lines for placement close to a heat source like the exaust, Also, the problem could be the fuel pump, you can have a pressure check done to see if the pressure is up to specks.

At first we thought it was getting vapor locked due to bad gas. Now, the check engine light is on. When we searched for the code it flashed all dashes and said -done-. Sometimes it won't start and when...

You haven't had vapor lock in over 25 years with fuel injection

What exactly defines bad gas, that never was the cause of
vapor lock

You have to retrieve the codes, diagnose them & come up
with a solution, or stop using it,so a repairs shop is where it
should have been some time ago

How do you fix vapor lock?

Vapor lock is more or less impossible with a fuel injected engine.
Years ago when engines used a carburetor, liquid gas flowed thru the line from the tank and sat in the bowl of the carb until it was pulled thru the venturi into the intake. If the fuel line or carb became too hot, the liquid gas would vaporize.
Fuel injectors accomplish the same effect by spraying a vapor of fuel into the cylinders under pressure.

Vapor locks

It could be a vapor lock but not likely. Since the introduction of fuel injection vapor lock has been eliminated.
You need to figure out if you are loosing fuel pressure or spark when it will not start back up. Could be a fuel pump relay or ignition module among other things. Even a problem with the vent for the gas tank.

Just a guess here, but check your ignition coil. Make sure it's mounted nice and tight to the block. a bad ground on a coil will mess with you bad. other than that, I'd check and replace your fuel filter.
