1 Answer

My 03 tj recently had a new fuel pump installed and since the has been hard starting. If I put the key in the on positionfor about 5 seconds it'll fire up right away. If I dont it'll sometimes after sitting a while be very hard to start.

Will doing it the way I have hurt anything? I just put the key in the on position for about 5 seconds before trying to start it. Then it seems to fire up fine.

  • wallygator67 Aug 26, 2010

Thanks, I kinda figured it was better than just cranking. Faster too for some reason. I just wanted to make sure there would be no long term effects. I guess its no harder on the pump than when the truck running though eh?

Your new fuel pump has a leaking check valve, alowing the gas to run back into the tank when parked.

Thats sorta what I thought. Any way of maybe backflushing it and hope its just something stuck in there

  • dougbender51 Aug 26, 2010

nope. it happens so often that people give up on it and just crank it untill it starts. ever noticed how long a cherokee with 4.0 cranks over before it starts?

  • dougbender51 Aug 26, 2010

no thats the best way to do it, why grind up your starter and battery. it is also the method of choice should you run out of gas, it will take several flicks of the key but it will start right up

When blazer sets over 4 or 5 hrs has to crank several times before starting

The fuel pump is designed to turn on for a couple of seconds and prime with the key on. This is normal. If there is an extended crank, the fuel pressure may be bleeding back into the tank through the check valve of the fuel pump or there is an injector leak/fuel pressure regulator leak causing the pressure to bleed off causing the extended crank. Install a fuel pressure gague and monitor the pressure to see if it bleeds off to 0. If it does, one of the afore mentioned is causing the problem

Turns over but acts like it's getting no gas

Possibly check valve in fuel pump is allowing the fuel back into the gas tank

Turn ignition key to ON so the dashboard lights are lit for 5 or 10 seconds,
then CRANK the engine.

This will allow the fuel time to get back to the engine. May take several tries.

Known problem, friend was recently told new pump would have to be installed $500+, decided a few extra seconds to start car once in a while was better option.

My 2004 cavalier will not turn over without excessive pumping of the gas pedal. Battery, starter and everything else seems to be fine. Is it the pump or something else?

Try this next time you start it. Turn the key to the run position, do not start the engine. Wait 3-5 seconds and turn the key off. Turn the key right back to the on position and wait for 3-5 seconds. Turn the key off. Repeat the above one more time. Now try to start. If it starts right up you have a fuel supply problem. Either the fuel pump is bleeding off or the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. Pumping the pedal is doing nothing besides buying time for the fuel system to pressurize. Post an engine size and I'll help you locate the fuel pressure regulator. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

MY DODGE DONT WANT TO START, WHE I PUT I LITTLE STARTING FLUID TRHU DE TRHOTTLE THE CAR START AND KEEP RUNING WITHOUT PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP

Try to cycle the key on/off 2-3 times at 5 second intervals. Then try to start it. If it cranks up, you have a fuel pump or regulator issue. Hope this helps, TJ

My 2001 ford ranger is hard to start turn the key for 5 seconds let off turn again and starts right up let it sit for 15 to 29 min and hard to start again changed injectors plugs and coil pack runs better...

sounds like fuel pressure bleeding off. Bad fuel pump or bad pressure regulator on fuel rail. Can you hear pump run for 5 seconds when you turn key on? do this twice, 30 deconds apart and see if it starts ok.

1999 hard starting expedition, with 5.4 engine

fuel pump may be going. try this. turn key on, listen for fuel pump to run for 5 seconds. Turn key off, wait 15 seconds or until you hear relay click inside car. Turn key on again for 5 seconds and ff for 15 seconds. repeat once more. This will pressurize fuel system to 40 psi so injectors have full pressure. If it starts quickly now, you are getting bleed down through the check valve in the fuel pump or the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail.

I have a 95 Maxima I changed the fuel injectors and now the car wont start.  so i put the old injectors back and it still wont turn over,  It stay on for about 2 sec can anyone help me

I assume you bled off fuel pressure before you installed the injectors. Try this to pressurize the fuel system. Turn the key to "on" position and wait 5 seconds. AT same time, listen carefully for a buzz sound that means the fuel pump is running to pressurize the system. It will shut off after 5 seconds. Then, turn off the key and wait 30 seconds for the computer power relay to shut off. Then, turn the key to "on" again. Thsi will run the fuel pump for another 5 seconds. Repeat 5 times. Fuel system should be pressurized now.
If it doesn't start now, you may have done something while you were changing the injector. good luck
