Hi : Mr bnwelter how are you
im very glad to help you

When an engine turns over but will not start you must start at
the beginning. You have battery and now you need fuel, spark, and compression. Many things can effect the lack of these things but there is many different things that could go wrong in these systems. Check each one individually.
FUEL, SPARK , COMPRESSION only three things needed for an internal combustion engine.
You may also want to make sure your distributer isn't 180 out.
Was there a new timing chain installed? If so, there is a chance that the timing marks aren't lined up correctly, or they were set with the #6 cylinder at TDC and not the #1 cylinder.
One senario, If your running a Holley carb, Chances are your cam is real high in compression (modified cam) and holleys come stock with the standard 6.5 Power valve. you change that out to a 3.5 and the back firing will cease. Had this same problem with a new 454, sounds so familiar.. Your story is just like my quest, turns out to be a 8.00 part..
How are your valves adjusted too tight and it will back fire and not start, adjust to 0 lash then half turn

accepted greetings
we wish you success in solving that problem

Car will turn over but wont get fire to anything

If you mean it does not get spark to the plugs, you would check for power and a ground signal at the coil. No power could be a faulty ASD relay.

My 1999 expedition wont start. your guy said it may be the pump, the the fuel shut off switch then the relay. not any of the above. whats the problem?

ok first check for fire at spark plugs if there is no fire then your problem could a sensor could be a crank or cam sensor or disconnected wire, check all your fuses, inside engine compart. and (inside the car) you need 3 elements for the engine to run, fuel, air and fire, if one of those is not present then your car wont start, it will turn over but wont run.

Try 2nd key.

If it does not fire up then it's the immobilizer / alarm circuit at work or at fault.

My 1991 honda civic runs fine yesturday and today it wont start please help

the car wont start? do you mean the engine wont turn over or it wont fire or run? if the car does not run but it turn over, check the basic..see if you have sparks and fuel, then check all your fuse pertaining to engine and ignition. the car need to have both thing in order for the engine to run. If you getting both sparks and fuel you engine may have jump time especially with older car with high miles, it the sign timing belt getting worn, you don't want it to break. if you don't get fire from spark plug then you may have a bad coil, distubutor, rotor or timing sensor. if you get no fuel, fuse blown, bad fuel pump relay or fuel pump it self. hope that help some ..good luck
