The clutch itself is replaceable fairly easily, you will need some snap ring pliars, a hub removal tool, and some patience. the parts and tools are available at most any local parts house, the new clutch should come with instructions, if not a repair manual is around 20 dollars

1994 Caprice Classic AC compressor clutch is coming apart. One of the metal rings is loose and off-center, causing shaking and looks like it could damage nearby stuff. Is there a way to replace the clutch...

Replacement clutches are available and you can have the clutch replaced. However, there may be a problem with the compressor bearings and the entire unit/system needs to be checked as well.

How do you remove the A/C clutch on a 2005 Ford E350 , 5.4 engine

Usually I replace the a/c compressor with a new one that has the clutch on it.

I do remember seeing a number of bolts holding the clutches on though.. never bothered to take it off though.

Clutches rarely go bad, but compressors leak.
If you have a slow compressor leak, you should replace the whole compressor with clutch.

I did find the following article on the Internet:

A/c clutch not working. Is the clutch replaceable

Your clutch will not work if the 'fluid' level is low. This is designed to protect the compressor.
Was your air cold before it stopped?
You can buy a pressure gauge and new coolant at most stores for around $20. Make sure it's the right coolant.
The clutch CAN be changed without replacing the compressor.

My compressor will kick on and off at random, air is ice cold too

Just change the clutch, its not that hard of a job. If you change the whole unit you will have to vacuum pump the whole thing down. And replace the freon. Just change the clutch. you might want to check the saftey switch that stops you from running with out freon.

How do you remove the Air conditioner clutch from a 1997 chevy

Replace the whole compressor. If you don't have the proper tools to replace the clutch with, you will never get it out. The compressors are bad for the front seals leaking on those, and would be best to replace the whole thing.

Noise from A/C Compressor

Yes, look for an aircon technician that can swap a/c compressor clutch without removing the compressor from the bracket. if your lucky enough there are technicians who can do it without even leaking or discharging the gas from your aircon system

Air compressor noise

a general rule of thumb is that if you have a bad a/c clutch you should replace the whole a/c compressor. it has been my experience that usually when you replace the clutch only a short time later the compressor fails because the seals get worn from the malfuntioning clutch and you lose the refrigerant and you have a locked up compressor. if you have a 134a system the whole pump should only cost about 130-165 dollars for a sanden style pump. the clutch alone cost half of that and maybe more. hope this helps. by the way when you open the system make sure that you replace the dryer moister will get in when you open the system and it will plug the dryer. when fully charged the system should read 35 psi on the low side and 130-150 on high side. also power wash the condenssor which is mounted on the front of the radiator this will allow the outside air to flow more freely through the coils and fins and make your a/c run more efficiently. please rate this solution......thanks
