How do i know if my starter in my 1986 crown vic works

if the engine turns over when cranking its working. you don`t say what the actual problem is. at the starter on the large terminal you should have battery voltage all the time. on the small terminal you should have battery voltage only when trying to start the car. if you do have power here then while trying to start the car tap the starter if it attempts to turn over the starter is no good. if you don`t have power at the small terminal then you will have to check for power at the solenoid/relay on the inner fender on the drivers side on the S wire when trying to start the car. this wire feeds battery voltage to the starter on the small terminal, if you don`t the solenoid/relay is bad. if you do then you will have to check for a damaged wire from the solenoid/relay to the starter. sometimes the starter motor could have a bad ground connection were it bolts up to the engine.

Atos ignition problems and screeching

If you hear a click under the hood from the starter the starter solenoid but starter is defective and you should rebuild it. If that is not the case I would replace the ignition starter switch, this is the electrical switch the key cylinder actuates to turn on the electrical system and engage the starter.

Car is slow to start

One single click or a series of rapid clicks. One single click would indicate that the starter is starting to go bad. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a weak battery. If you don't get it fixed than you have three options. 1. Pray it starts 2. Cross your fingers 3. Don't shut off the car after you have started it.

If you have to play with the harness to get it to start, there is a dead or broken spot in wire harness. Replace harness soon before you have a vehicle fire.

Sometimes it won't start, just clicks. replaced the starter and the battery. power gets to the starter, so don't think it's the ignition switch.

if your power going to starter from ignition switch ,your starter has to be faulty or main wires on starter has bad connection

Hi!

I still think its a bad starter because when they go bad sometimes, You still hear the starter running but it doenst do anything. Because the starter runs one way and lock the other and when the Bendix goes bad that's the symptoms it keep just running. here is what you can do. Take the starter out and see if the little gear on it only turns one way, If it turn both way then you starter is bad. Good luck bro

2004 ion won't start. Lights work. When I turn key don't get series of clicks, get one snap.

That symptom usually means the solenoid on the starter is bad and no longer is completing the circuit to engage the starter. A new starter will likely solve that issue. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a week battery. You can try repeatedly turning the key to the start position rapidly, sometimes the starter wil start working. You can also try tapping the starter while somebody holds the key in the start position, if the starter engages place it.
