Losing power and creeps along, I know you said it is not your fuel pump but everything you said is what my vehicle was doing and it was the fuel pump. As in the mornings it would start fine and drive normal but as it started to heat up it would be like muffled backfiring and would barely creep up a hill, turn it off for about 20 30 mintues run fine til it heated up again then the same thing. If i tried to start it right after I turned it off it wouldn't start and sometimes barely started, but if I let it sit it would start. I say its something with the fuel system, since you are sure its not the pump. Maybe the filter, relay or line clogging. Good Luck My Brother Tim

Test the fuel pressure with a gauge, don't guess, a couple lbs low will cause your symptoms. It now sounds like the pump has fully failed.

Vapor locks

It could be a vapor lock but not likely. Since the introduction of fuel injection vapor lock has been eliminated.
You need to figure out if you are loosing fuel pressure or spark when it will not start back up. Could be a fuel pump relay or ignition module among other things. Even a problem with the vent for the gas tank.

88 Toyota Corolla backfires through carburetor.

If that is carbureted, and has a mechanical fuel pump, try running a length of fuel line from inlet side of pump to a gas can that has fresh, clean fuel, and if it runs good that way, you know problem is most likely in the tank. Removing the tank & cleaning it out is best solution from there. I'd even be tempted to add a small bottle or 2 of Lucas Fuel Sytem Cleaner to first fill in clean tank, just to help clean lines as well as carb.
