My car ran out of gas and after I filled the tank up it still will not start. It turns over and sounds like it will rev up but it doesn't. What do I need to do?

Running out of fuel with most vehicles causes the fuel pump to overheat and burn out. The fuel inside the tank actually aids in cooling the fuel pump. I recommend that you check the fuel pressure to start with a diagnosis. You most likely going to find zero or very low pressure, and in this case, the fuel pump will need to be replaced. I'm not sure what the exact vehicle is we are speaking of or mileage on the vehicle.

Leave the key on for a while to allow the fuel pump to refill the fuel line, etc.

After filling with gas truck loses power ,backfires and dies.turn key off and restart sometimes is fine

I had a similar experience a couple of times after filling my gas tank. In my case there was no backfire but an occasion misfire. The car would not rev-up quickly and would sometimes stall when it was first started. Adding a fuel boost/cleaner additive and when the fuel level was at 1/2 tank, filling it up with premium gas (at a different gas station), solved the problem.

Sounds like you possibly got bad gas, or your at the bottom level of your gas tank and got the nasty stuff. Try running a good fuel treatment through the system and fill it up with premium gasoline from Marathon

sounds like the head-gasket blew, and the fuel pump may have gone out. I would really have to be there to know for sure. I guess you need to see if you have spark, and if fuel is coming to the engine, may have had a fuse or two go out, also. Good Luck Tim

Ran out of gas. nearly filled tank, turned on, wont move

If the engine revs up but the car does not move it is not going into drive. If you can push the car easily when in drive and not at all when it is in park. Then the shifter part is working. If you can not push when in drive check your linkage the cale/linkage may be broken or disconnected. If the pushing test was okay and you do not hear any banging noise when in gear trying to move. That would indicate a broken c.v. joint or axle. Then your problem is internally in the transmission and running out of gas had nothing to do with what happened just occured at the wrong time.

Ran out of Gas .Filled Gas Tank car ran till the next day. Tried to start and it would not start???? 2007 Cobolt NEED HELP Rich

Could've burnt up the pump running it dry and filling it up. The cold gas may have damaged the pump when you filled it. Check your fuel pressure to be sure.

93 mercury villager ran out of gas. filled with gas will not star

When you ran it out of gas you may have ruined the fuel pump. They are very touchy. you can check it by having someone listen under the car by the fuel tank and you turn the key to the on position, be sure not to try and start it. When you turn the key to the on position you should hear the pump prime its self. If you dont the pump is bad if you do then you might look into the fuel filter it may have gotten clogged when it ran out of gas.
