Question about 1996 Mercury Sable

Cant get a wrench or socket on the top hub bearing bolt. Drive shaft is in the way and I can not push the drive shaft through the hub in order to fit a wrench or socket on it is there somthing else i need to loosen

You will need a deepwall socket. Using a wrench will damage the nut and you're going to need that socket to re-torque the nut again. They're about $25 for a good quality socket.

Front hub assembly


Instructions
    • Park the vehicle on a flat, level paved or concrete surface. Place the vehicle in gear or park and apply the parking brake.
    • 2Place a wheel chock behind a rear tire (or front if you're doing a rear hub-bearing assembly).

    • Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel of the hub bearing you're replacing with the breaking bar and a socket; do not remove them.
    • 4Lift the wheel with the floor jack in a safe and secure manner. Support the vehicle on a jack stand, preferably on the frame rail if present.
    • 5Remove the lug nuts and wheel.
    • 6Locate the caliper bolts and remove them with the ratchet and a socket.
    • 7Pry the caliper off gently using a large straight-edged screwdriver and support the caliper on the coil spring with a bungee cord. Do not allow the caliper to dangle on the rubber brake hose.
    • 8Locate the caliper bridge bolts (if applicable) and remove them with the ratchet and a socket. You may want to break them loose with the breaking bar first if they're really tight. On some vehicles, the brake pads will remain in the bridge and can be removed by prying out with the screwdriver. On other models, the pads stay intact and may be clipped to the caliper. If you have to remove the pads, do so by taking note how they were placed in the bridge and be sure you're able to put them back in the same manner they were extracted.
    • 9Remove the rotor. If it is stuck to the hub, you may have to hit it with a large rubber mallet. Use a rubber mallet if you're not going to replace the rotor, so you don't damage the surface.
    • 10Remove any ABS wires attached to the hub bearing assembly (if applicable) or unclip the wire and trace it to the plug. In many applications, if the ABS wire is integrated with the wheel-bearing hub assembly, a new one will come with it. If you're not sure, check the box of the new bearing and if there's an ABS wire, follow the wire until you locate the plug, unplug it and unclip it from its mounts. If ABS is present but not integrated with the bearing assembly, remove the sensor from the bearing with a ratchet and socket.
    • 11Remove the spindle nut with the breaking bar and a spindle nut socket. Remove the washer behind the spindle nut.
    • 12Locate the wheel-bearing assembly bolts behind the knuckle, and loosen them with the breaking bar and socket. The location of these can sometimes create a tight area to place a socket and tool on to remove them with. You may have to apply some ingenuity. Replace the socket on the ratchet to extract the bolts quickly and easier. Most hubs have three or four bolts.
    • 13Install the slide hammer onto the lug studs and secure with tightened lug nuts. This may take several attempts and a couple of breaks in between to remove the hub bearing from the knuckle. Pay close attention to your progress and try to determine when the bearing will separate. Take note of how the backing plate is installed between the knuckle and the bearing so you can replace it in the same manner.
    • 14Sand off the rust and corrosion around the knuckle with a fine- to medium-grade sandpaper. Move the drive-shaft spindle around to get it out of your way. Take your time when doing this and make sure it's as clean as possible.
    • 15Place the backing plate in its original position and place the new bearing onto the knuckle. Manipulate the drive-shaft spindle splines into the center of the hub bearing. Push the bearing on as far as you can, making sure to line it up correctly if ABS lines or plugs are present.
    • 16Replace the wheel-bearing assembly bolts. They're pretty long, so as soon as you can thread them into the new bearing, start to tighten them. Pull the bearing in by tightening the bolts a little bit at a time and then switching to the next bolt to make sure the bearing assembly does not shift in the knuckle and cause damage. Once the bearing is drawn in flush, use the breaking bar to get the bolts as tight as you can get them.
    • 17Replace washer and spindle nut and tighten to proper torque specifications with the half-inch drive torque wrench and spindle socket.
    • 18Replace the brakes in the same manner you extracted them. You may need to push the caliper piston in a bit with a C-clamp to get it over the rotor. Plug in the ABS lines or reattach them to the bearing, if applicable.
    • 19Replace the tire and lug nuts, and tighten the lug nuts as tight as you can get them.
    • 20Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts in an alternate fashion with the torque wrench and socket at the correct wheel nut specifications torque setting.
    • 21Pump the brake pedal if you had to push the caliper piston in with a C-clamp to restore hydraulic pressure to that caliper piston.
    • 22Remove the wheel chock, release the parking brake, and go for a test drive.

I cant get the front hub assembly off my 03 buick rendevous


Items/Tools needed:

35mm or 1 3/8" axle socket
3/4 or 19mm socket for lug nuts or lug wrench
15mm socket for brake caliper and bracket
13mm socket for wheel bearing bolts (extentions as well)
Breaker bar or impact wrench to remove lug nuts and axle nut (Note: Do not use impact driver to install axle nut).
Torque wrench for axle nut
Hub puller - Optional
Hammer

Directions

1. Jack the appropriate side of the car up. Make sure the rear wheels are blocked and/or set the parking brake. Use a jackstand to support vehicle at subframe for safety.
2. Remove wheel.
3. Remove brake caliper and bracket.
4. Remove rotor.
5. Using 35mm axle socket, remove axle nut, turn counterclockwise. You will either need an impact or a long breaker bar. They are installed with a lot of torque or may be rusted out or corrroded.
6. Push the axle back as far as possible. It won't come all the way out or through the hub, but will become loose. You can either get a tool that will push it out like a hub puller, or just use a hammer making sure not to hit the axle shaft threads and damage them. Put the axle nut back on the axle shaft so it is flush with the top. Then place 35mm axle nut socket on the axle nut and tap on the 35mm socket with the hammer not the threads on the axle shaft spline.
7. Disconnect the wheel sensor connector and then remove hub side connector from the bracket (unclip).
8. Take a 13mm socket with extensions as needed and remove the 3 bolts on the backside of the bearing around the axle. Be sure to use PBBlaster to help loosen the bolts.
9. The hub/bearing should come loose without need needing a hub puller. Be sure to note the sheet metal spacer between the hub and spindle with also has the bracket for the wheel sensor connector.
10. Double check both parts (hubs) to make sure they match.
11. Lube the axle shaft splines with good quality bearing grease before installing the hub. Clean off any old grease and crud first.
12. Install the hub assembly with the wires from the bearing at the bottom. Line up hub splines with axle shaft splines and push in on hub. Note: Don't forget that sheet metal plate between the spindle and wheel bearing. Note: Make sure the wheel sensor wires don't get pinched by the axle shaft.
13. Install the 3 13mm bolts to 96ft lbs. Service manual recommends replacing with new ones. Some hubs like AC Delco will come with new bolts which have threadlocker.
14. Install the axle nut. As tightened down it will pull the driveshaft the rest of the way in. Torque axle nut to GM specs of 159 ft-lbs or the figure specified by the hub manufacturer. It is recommended to use a new axle nut but not necessary.
15. Install the rotor, brackets and caliper. Torque caliper bracket bolts to 137 ft-lb and caliper pin bolts to 63 ft-lb.
16. Install the connector to the sheet metal bracket and reconnect both connectors.
17. Install the wheel. Torque lug nuts in a star pattern at 100 ft-lbs each.
18. Road test car and ensure any ABS and TRAC OFF light are off.

FRONT DRIVE AXLE Hubs and Bearings REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Models 44, 60, 70 and 80 with Manual or Automatic Locking Hubs
  1. Raise the vehicle and install jackstands.
  2. Refer to Manual or Automatic Free Running Hub Removal and Installation and remove the hub assemblies. Fig. 1: Remove the outer locknut on the Model 60/70 front drive axle 88477g63.gif

  3. Remove the wheel bearing lock nut, using a hub nut wrench.
  4. Remove the lock ring from the bearing adjusting nut. This can be done with your finger tips or a screwdriver. Fig. 2: Exploded view of the front hub retaining hardware 88471109.gif

  5. Using a hub nut wrench remove the bearing adjusting nut.
  6. Remove the caliper and suspend it out of the way (see the brake section).
  7. Slide the hub and disc assembly off the spindle. The outer wheel bearing will slide out as the hub is removed, so be prepared to catch it. To install:
  8. Carefully position the hub and disc assembly on the spindle.
  9. Install the outer bearing cone and roller, and the adjusting nut. NOTE: The adjusting nut has a small dowel on one side. This dowel faces outward to engage the locking ring.
  10. Using a hub nut wrench tighten the bearing adjustment nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm), while rotating the wheel back and forth to seat the bearings.
  11. Back off the adjusting nut approximately 90°.
  12. Install the lock ring by turning the nut to the nearest hole and inserting the dowel pin. NOTE: The dowel pin must seat in a lock ring hole for proper bearing adjustment and wheel retention.
  13. Install the outer lock nut and tighten to 50-80 ft. lbs. (68-108 Nm). Final end-play of the wheel on the spindle should be 0.001-0.010 in. (0.025-0.25mm).
  14. Assemble the hub parts.
  15. Install the caliper.
  16. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
Model 44 With Full-Time 4-Wheel Drive
  1. Remove the wheel cover.
  2. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the axle shaft nut. Fig. 3: Remove the wheel bearing adjusting nut from the Model 44 front axle 88477g64.gif

  3. Raise the support the front end on jackstands.

  5. Unbolt the caliper and support it out of the way. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BRAKE LINE!
  6. Remove the inboard brake pad.
  7. Remove the axle shaft nut and washer.
  8. Through the hole provided in the rotor, remove the six retainer bolts.
  9. Position pull C-4358, or equivalent, over the wheel lugs and install the lug nuts. Tighten the main screw of the puller to remove the hub, bearings, retainer and outer seal as an assembly.
  10. Insert a prybar through the U-joint and wedge the shaft inward as far as it will go. Make sure that it is wedged securely and can't be moved.
  11. Install the hub, rotor and bearing assembly and tighten the retainer bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
  12. Install the brake adapter. Tighten the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  13. Remove the prybar form the U-joint.
  14. Install the axle shaft nut and tighten it to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm), then continue tightening it to align the cotter pin holes. Install the cotter pin.
  15. Using the lube fitting, fill the knuckle with NLGI, Grade 2, multi-purpose EP grease until the grease is seen flowing through the inner seal. Fig. 5: Lubrication fitting location on the rotor top hat 88477g69.gif

  16. Install the inner brake pad and caliper (see Section 9).
  17. Install the wheels and tighten the lug nuts to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).

How technical is it to replace a front wheel bearing on a 2005 Pontiac SV6 and can I do it without any specialized tools


you will need a big socket (20 or 21 mm) and 1/2 inch drive to remove axle nut and torque wrench to reinstall. The book DOES call for a special tool to get the hub off the axle, but I have never used one before.


Removal & Installation


  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  4. Remove the brake caliper and wire aside.
  5. Remove the brake rotor.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the wheel speed sensor.
  7. Remove the wheel speed sensor connector from the bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
  8. Remove the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts.
  9. Install Wheel Hub Removal tool J-42129 to the hub and bearing assembly in order to remove the hub and bearing assembly from the wheel drive shaft.
  10. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.

To install:
  1. Install the hub and bearing assembly to the steering knuckle.
  2. Install the 3 hub and bearing assembly bolts and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  3. Install the wheel speed sensor connector into the bracket until the locking tabs click into place.
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the wheel speed sensor.
  5. Install the axle nut to the wheel drive shaft and hand tighten.
  6. Install the brake rotor.
  7. Use a screw driver or similar tool to stop the rotation of the brake rotor.
  8. Tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
  9. Install the brake caliper.
  10. Install the tire and wheel.

How to replace the center support bearing and what size bolts or if studs are used what size nuts are required? Also what is the best tool to use for changing the spark plug behind the steering shaft?


The center support bearing is secured to the cross-member using either a stud with an 11/16 in. nut or sometimes an 18mm nut. or it can also be sucured using a 3/8 in. bolt with a 5/8 in. bolt head and either a 15mm, 5/8", 11/16", or an 18mm nut, and GM did not stop the assembly line when they ran out of a certain nut or bolt and that is why there could be so many different ones used.

(A split drive-shaft is a balanced unit and it must be marked for proper alignment before separating the two halves or the drive shaft will no longer be in balance and will cause a vibration and early u-joint failure, and be very sure that there is a line on each half of the drive-shaft before it is separated so that the drive-shaft can be aligned re-assembled correctly)

The center support bearing should be pressed off and on the drive shaft using a hydraulic press, (a machine shop usually does not charge very much to do that) and using a hammer and a drift to replace the center support bearing is not recommended however some people do replace the center support bearing that way and a lot of the time they will damage the drive shaft or center support bearing and that will only make it more difficult and time consuming to properly install the center support bearing.

(The u-joint and the axle yoke should also be marked together before the u-joint is removed from the axle yoke so that they are installed back in the same way that they came out to prevent any drive shaft vibration)

To change the spark plug behind the steering shaft use a spark plug socket (a good spark plug socket will also have a provision for attaching a 5/8" or 16mm wrench to the end of the spark plug socket) and instead of putting an extension and a ratchet on the socket, slip the socket onto the spark plug and then use the wrench to loosen the spark plug and to tighten it, but also use a length of 3/8" fuel line and push the end of the spark plug into the fuel line and then use it to start and run down the spark plugs and also to remove the spark plugs once they have been loosened.

How do i get to the wheel bearings? my truck makes a vibration when i drive slower i was told to check the bearings but i cant find a book or anything that tells me how to get to them.


I'm guessing you're talking about the front wheel bearings?

The wheel bearings are a sealed unit which has the hub pressed into it.

You first have to remove the brake caliper and rotor.

If you turn the wheels all the way to one side and look behind the knuckle, you will see three bolt heads (bolts going into the hub). I think they're 15mm or something close to that.

Remove the three bolts and hammer the hub out of the knuckle.

Assemble in reverse order.

front wheel bearing comes as complete hub assembly remove brake calliper and brake disc remove drive shaft nut at the back of hub housing there are some bolts wire brush this area well use penetrating oil remove the bolts tap hub out of housing can be tight so take your time clean housing well then fit new hub secure bolts fit and tourqe up hub drive shaft nut fit disc and calliper

How do you change the front bearings


hi, now this is a big job and the nut you need to undo you will need a air gun to undo is as it is torqued up that tight that you wont undo it using any hand tools but here is how you do it.
1. put car on axle stands so wheels are off the floor and remove the wheels.
2. On the side that the bearing needs replacing you need to undo the bottom ball joint witch is under neath the disk break should be just one nut and bolt.
3. is best to undo the track rod end from the steering rack this is the tie rod and should be located in the wheel hub towards the drivers door and is held in place with one nut from under neath.
4. after you undo both of these you will then need a ball joint splitter to sepperate these parts from the hub as they will be to tight to remove from their locating possition.
5. now to get to the bearing itself this is where you need an airgun or similar tool they use in a garage. now right at the centre of the wheel hub you will see a really bug nut attatched to the end of the drive shaft and you can see the end off the drive shaft coming through the hub. I think the nut is nearly a 30m or 32m socket to undo.
6. Once this is undone gently tap the end of the drive shaft through the hub whilst gently pulling the hub outwards dont pull the hub outwards if the drive shaft isnt coming free from the hub as you can pull the drive shaft out of the gearbox and then you will have a right mess with geasrbox oil everywhere as the drive shaft is only push fit into gear box.

If the drive shaft is coming free from the hub then keep pulling the hub towards you untill the drive shaft is free (secure driveshaft with string so as not to put stress on the drive shaft bearing).
Now you should be able to remove the old bearing and insert the new make sure you clean the old bearing out properly and use new grease to lube the new bearing.

When doing the drive shaft back up you need to use air gun again to tighten the nut up enough to be safe to drive as their is alot of pressure on these parts.
You wont undo the nut without a air compressor and air tools buying these would be more expensive than paying a garage to do the repairs themselves.
Please choose carefully as once you have started if you have any problems you cant take the car to a garage as it will be in bits.

If you are going to do this yourself then please buy a workshop manual as this will give you the correct torque settings as the bearing has to be torqued up to a required setting else the bearing will just fail again.

  1. Remove the tire and wheel center cap.
  2. Remove the drive axle nut.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel. .
  4. Remove the brake rotor.
  5. Disengage the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing. Place a brass drift against the outer end of the wheel drive shaft in order to protect the wheel drive shaft threads. Sharply strike the brass drift with the hammer. Do not attempt to remove the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing at this time.
  6. Remove the wheel hub and bearing from the steering knuckle by removing the three bolts coming in from the back side of the knuckle.
Of course you may have to use a hammer to loosen the bearing from the knuckle.
