Question about Oldsmobile Silhouette

1 Answer

My 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette would not start. We had someone give us a boost. Two different tried. The second one reved the engine and it worked. We started the car and the security light was on. We made it home. It did not start again. We tried battery charger and another boost and it would not start. Finally we took the battery out and replace it. We tried to start it and it has all power but will not start. If we take the key out it is still trying to start. It's daylight and the outside lights come on. Please help!

Thank you! Is it possible that it could be the ignition switch? A mechanic made this suggestion, since the car tried to start after the key was removed.

By design, the headlamps will illuminate for safety. If it will crank and not start, the security system may be in play. Double check your battery(just to safe). You may have to remove the alternator and have it tested. My advice would be this; have it towed to the nearest GM dealership for they may have to reprogram the security system. This is what it sounds most probable. If this does turn out to be the security system, have them reprogram(usually around $50-$75) and then run down to your nearest autoparts store and have them test the alternator for free. Just to verify the charging system and give you piece of mind. Let me know what you find.

It's very possible, but the reprogramming will be part of the replacement procedure. Everything has to match and jive or you will still have a no start even after a new switch. There is no bypass that you can do and they have to do the flash through the Tech2 unit.

My 2000 silhouette oldsmobile turns over but wont start....whats the first thing i should do???

I don't think it has a fuel re-set button. The first thing to do is verify if engine has both spark (ignition) and fuel. Listen for the fuel pump to come on for a couple of seconds when you turn key to ON (not crank). You may have to stand by rear near the gas tank to hear it, while someone turns key on. A hum or a short buzz? With key on, it will only stay on for 2 or 3 seconds to pressurize the system, and then turn off without a cranking signal. If you hear it, the pump is working properly. If not, then a bad fuel pump or the wiring to it is not working correctly.
Check for spark on one or more plugwires when cranking engine, to verify the ignition circuit is working. You can purchase a cheap "spark tester" at a parts store, ground it by its clip, and put the end of plug wire on the tester. When cranking engine, you should observe a good blue spark, meaning your ignition is o.k. If weak or no spark, you will need your ignition diagnosed-could be bad coil, or coil packs, bad ignition module, crank sensor, etc.
If you are getting fuel up to engine, and spark is good, further diagnosis would include checking your injector circuit for injector operation.
Good luck. Post back for further assistance.

Power window will not roll up on 2000 oldsmobile silhouette drivers side

its always the driver's side ..
you have to take the door panel off
then see if you can reach the moter
see if the wires are making contact
take them off and check for power
put them back on
test.
if it doesn't work and you hear no sound
try putting something like a piece of wood up against the side of the motor and give it [the wood] a fir couple of taps with a hammer
then try again.
if that doesn't work you need to take the motor out and replace it.

Vehicle is overheating...2000 oldsmobile silhouette

It's possible you have a blown head gasket. In that case, the heater core which is above the engine fills with exhaust and stops working. To verify this condition, check exhaust for excessive white smoke. If leak is still small, it's possible you won't see much. In that case have a shop check the radiator for hydrocarbons (exhaust). If the test shows any in cooling system, you definitely have a head gasket problem.
I'd also check the thermostat. Sometimes it can give similar symptom but more often than not this will trace back to the hg.
