Question about 1988 Volvo 740
Check the crankshaft postioning sensor. this should be located at the rear of the engine where the tranny and engine mount. if its bad it will not let the coil put out spark. I had the same problem with my 940 and that solved my problem. try this, gently pull up on the sensor cable, then try to start the car. sometimes it will start, but if the sensor is completely gone, replace it.
