Question about 1988 Volvo 740

1 Answer

I have a 1988 volvo 740 turbo with no spark. I tested the coil and it is good. with key on I am getting oscillating power. Also when the ignition is just turned to on and not cranked I can hear two different relays come on which I believe need to happen. Any good things to check

Check the crankshaft postioning sensor. this should be located at the rear of the engine where the tranny and engine mount. if its bad it will not let the coil put out spark. I had the same problem with my 940 and that solved my problem. try this, gently pull up on the sensor cable, then try to start the car. sometimes it will start, but if the sensor is completely gone, replace it.

1988 volvo 740 gle long time at garage cannot start lot of part been change e.g distributor.coil.fuel pump.filter.service air flow and devider but still cannot run the engine

hi, you need to take the spark plags out and clean them. the air filter must be taken off and pour an egg cup full of petrol into the carburetter, this is very important not to put too much as this will WET the spark plug and you will need to press the thottle full bore while turning the engine over. try this to test if fuel, spark plugs, points / electronic ignition, ignition, firing order (leads the wrong way around), mechanical parts, all other wiring correct, gerry

Can not get a spark on my 1987 volvo 740 gle non turbo changed coil and still no spark please help thanks

check your voltage amplifier for the spark, it sits on the inside of the fender , look in your manual. If it is not grounded to the metal well it will not work right. Remove it and clean the back side, fine steel wool
does well. Or it may not be working

It amplifies the low level signal from the computer to a level that the coil can use to generate a spark

I have the benefit of having a spare one for testing.

It would not be the first one that had that problem

The other thing to check is the little coil in the distributor . It needs replacing every 100000 or so there is a spec for the resistance through it and the plate it mounts on can be loose.

OR

Find a small shop that knows volvo's and mention these 2 problems

Trans code number automatic tranny 88 volvo

Hello. i have owned many 740's, 240's, 122's, and 850's. I have done my fair share of transmission swaps. The transmission tag is located right above the trans-oil pan and directly below the od seloind on the drivers-side. if your volvo 740 is a non-turbo, the transmission is AW-70L, if it is a turbo-model then it is AW-71L. Good luck :)
