Question about 1998 Chevrolet Astro

1 Answer

I took my 1998 Astro van in to have a/c looked at. They told me it was my a/c compressor and vacuum line. Well I would like to rebuild the a/c compressor. Would just replacing the o-rings and buying a shaft seal kit be good enough? I got a price on a remaufactured a/c compressor but would still like to rebuild the one I have to see if it would work. can you give me an idea if rebuilding it would work?

Proubly not.you won't have a warrenty if you do,evenwhen you buy an a/c compressor from your local parts store, you'll need to purchase the plastic filter and condensor, about $250,here in wv but worth it in the long run.

Only air from defrost vent. Checked vacuum lines. All good. What else to check?

You would check for vac at the blend door servo. The servo could be leaking, or it may not have vac from the control valve on the dash.

2005 Astro Van AC only blowes through windshield defrost vent

The mode doors in the dash are powered by engine vacuum, if vacuum is missing the default setting is the defrost vent. Look under the hood near the firewall for a disconnected vacuum line.

1999 Chevy Astro Van. Don't know exact model # of

You should have a 4l60E in your astro van. Which is electrically controlled, so no vacuum modulator. However, to address the ventilation selector not working... look for a vacuum line exiting the firewall and going to the passenger rear of the intake manifold. You will likely find it broken or disconnected there.

THERE IS A VACUUM LINE THAT GOES FROM THE LEFT FRONT OF THE ENGINE TO THE VACUUM CHECK VALVE NEAR THE ACCUMULATOR. IF THAT LINE IS BROKEN THE PROBLEM YOU HAVE IS NO HVAC MODE SWITCHING.
