Question about 1998 Pontiac Sunfire

The ecm codes we read from a 98 pontiac sunfire are throttle position sensor low voltage, egr valve open throttle pintle position, theft deterrent crank signal malfunction, serial communications malfunction (which we found was the ecm). our dash warning lights will come on all of a sudden(a bunch of them) and the temp gauge and the rpm gauge will either work or won't work. the fuel and the speedometer always work. the airbags have been set off in this car which a mechanic told the previous owner that them going off sometimes affects the gauges. is the ecm bad (how can we check?) or is it loose wiring or both?

Hi, airbag deployment rarely causing damage to the wiring in the dash. The gauge cluster may of been damaged internally, but this usually shows up right away after repairs are done. I would check the connector on the PCM it is a cam lock design and if its been damaged or not closed properly it can cause crazy things to happen to the gauges. Good luck.

    The PCM is located on the passenger side under the front bumper. You can gain access to it by removing the front tire. Be sure to properly support the car and remove then inner splash shield.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE P0404 ELECTRIC EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION OPENED Features of the Circuit

  • By any chance if high combustion temperatures are created by oxides of nitrogen then an Exhaust Gas Re-circulation EGR system which is the chief feature of this system will be boosted to counter this.
  • This is done by supplying small amounts of exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber.
  • Combustion temperatures are minimized as soon as the air/ fuel mixture dilutes the exhaust gases.
  • The EGR valve has been specially designed to generate exhaust gases to the engine without using intake manifold vacuum.
  • This valve regulates exhaust flow entering the intake manifold from the exhaust manifold through an orifice with an ECM controlled pintle.
  • The pintle position is monitored by the ECM using inputs from the Throttle Position (TP) and the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
  • This task over, the ECM then directs the EGR valve to operate as necessary by controlling an ignition signal through the ECM.
  • The ECM further monitors the results of its command through a feedback signal.
  • The desired EGR position can be checked with the help of a scan tool.
  • A voltage signal representing the EGR valve pintle position is sent to the ECM by a 5 volt reference and a ground to the EGR valve.
  • The scan tool can also be used here to note the feedback signal which is the actual position of the EGR pintle.
  • The correct EGR position should always be close to the commanded or Desired EGR position.
  • This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is capable of identifying an open or short circuit.

P2135 FORD Description

Electric throttle control actuator consists of throttle control motor, throttle position sensor, etc. The throttle position sensor responds to the throttle valve movement.


The throttle position sensor has the two sensors. These sensors are a kind of potentiometers which transform the throttle valve position into output voltage, and emit the voltage signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). In addition, these sensors detect the opening and closing speed of the throttle valve and feed the voltage signals to the ECM. The ECM judges the current opening angle of the throttle valve from these signals and the ECM controls the throttle control motor to make the throttle valve opening angle properly in response to driving condition

96 s10 with 2.2 4 cyl. got code 1406 which is egr valve pintle circuit. Would this cause rough rich idle,bogging under full throttle even in nuetral and no power. Only code that come up is 1406. Thanks...


pintle position on EGR valve is incorrect if voltages are correct on EGR connector replace EGR valve if voltage readings are wrong at connector replace ECM both are found on ebay for under 75 bucks

2005 Pacifica check engine light spit out this code P 0406


This is an EGR code and it is generally caused by the EGR passages being carboned up and not allowing proper flow to the valve. I would remove the EGR valve and inspect the passages and clean them if necessary before I went any further.

My 00 pontiac grand prix starts 3 seconds and shuts down


P1122 is a throttle position sensor code. P1629 is a theft deterrent system code. P1122 will set when the voltage signal from the throttle position sensor drops below 0.1 volts. Normally, the sensor should measure between 1 volt at idle and 4 volts at full throttle. A failed throttle position sensor could easily cause your problem.

As for the theft deterrent system code, with that code set, the car shouldn't start at all (if the code is active). With P1629, the engine computer should refuse to deliver fuel to the engine. This code can be stored for up to 40 warm up cycles before clearing itself, so unless it is currently active, there may not be any need to worry about it.

I would inspect the wiring and connectors leading to the throttle position sensor. If that wiring is good, I would replace the sensor and see where that got me. Give that a try and let us know how things go.

Missing, stalling Pontiac Sunfire


The OBD II code for P0400 is Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction.
I'm sure the only thing you have left is you may have to replace the EGR valve or check for any leak from the vaccum lines going to to EGR valve.
