Question about Saturn SL2

1 Answer

"Service engine soon" light is on. The transmission shifts randomly. It may start out in high, slams into gear hard. It seems all gears work, just seems they are not being controlled. Thanks, Bob

Hi, the check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

The code will then be interpreted which will inturn let you know the cause of the random shift in transmission and the solution to it...

Transmission shifts hard

You don't give me much information to work with. However, 1st, look at the engine mounts. You may have a broken mount. This will make it feel like the transmission is shifting hard. Other than that, there is only a few things that will cause this. The speed sensor tells the computer when to shift the shift solenoids. It may not be "seeing" a quality signal. If this is the case, the speedometer will be bouncing too. Last idea is that it is skipping a gear. Starts in 1st, should go to 2nd at about 10 MPH. 3rd at 25 to 30 MPH. And, if you have a Overdrive transmission, it should go into overdrive at around 45 to 55 MPH. If it is skipping 2nd, it will engage 3rd at a high engine speed, and will feel like a sudden slam into gear. If this is true, your transmission needs some work. Hope this all helps. Good Luck.

My car will go off gear when i brake hard and it takes a few seconds to pick up gear again

It sounds to me like your transmission fluid level is low, when you brake hard the fluid moves to the front of the pan and leaves a void for the filter to grab air instead of fluid. When you stop the fluid settles back and away you go again. This could cause premature transmission failure so check it soon and top it up ASAP. With the transmission cold the fluid level should be near the add mark, full mark only if the trans is hot.

Need a new or rebuilt tranny for my 2005 maxima sl

Why do you need a new transmission? What was it doing. Becareful in working with a dealership. One of the most common problems is that of hard shifting or the engining reving inbetween gears then slamming into gear. This is a problem with the valve body that shifts the gears. If you get this fixed soon and are careful driving it to a good transmission shop, you will not need a full transmission. The valve body, fulid and gaskets must be replaced. This will run $1500-$1800 not $3500
This is a known defect withthe transmission that has not been recalled. Report this to NHTSA as a safety related issue.

Transmissionn not engaging. will not shift into any gear but if you rev the rpms to about 2000 to 2500 it will shift into gear, not a slam or hard shift but as soon as you lower the rpms it disengages...

Sounds like you should top up the transmission fluid.Warm the car up and the check it with the engine running and in park. The dipstick is on the drivers side below the battery and on the top of the transmission. If it checks good then you need to take it to a transmission shop to have it checked.

How to reset the service engine soon light

If there is an Auto Zone or any other large auto parts store, have them scan the truck for the DTC codes. The DTC codes will identify the Issues that needs to be addressed in your engine and transmission that has set off the service engine light on. Once the issues has been resolved, the light will reset it self after the third start up and after 40 start up will erase it self from the history as long as there is no additional issues. Good luck and hope this helps, Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.

No passing gear

My car did (past tense) the same thing. The service engine light is flashing until you let off the gas because raw fuel is being dumped into the catalytic converter. The transmission won't shift because the converter is plugged. When you push the pedal to the floor the transmission computer holds the transmission in gear. Meanwhile the engine computer is raising the rpms. It will seem like a transmission problem but it is more likely a plugged catalytic converter. I had converter changed. The engine has A LOT more power, great acceleration and the transmission shifts perfectly.

Transmission shifting funny.

sounds like either your transmission is having problems with the valves...might want to have that looked at before your transmission dies completely......also have them check vacuum lines as i believe that car uses vacuum pressure to shift.
