Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier
HI, The Oil Light comes on to show a low oil pressure not just that it is low on oil. If your not experience any unusual engine noise i would not suspect low oil pressure but more likely a bad oil pressure sending unit.

Here are a few things to try. I just went through this ordeal and it is not an easy thing to troubleshoot. First thing if your oil level is fine I'd change the oil sending unit very cheap part and easy to replace and while doing this i would also recommend changing the oil and oil filter. If this does not solve the problem then this is where it gets up in price to fix. It is either a bad/weak oil pump or your engine bearing clearance is too much. Oil Pump replacement your looking at about 250 to 600 dollars depending to replace it depending on vehicle. However if you don't hear any knocking or ticking noise coming from the engine it probably is still okay. If you don't want to replace the pump or cannot afford to I'd add some lucas to it or 20w50 oil. I had the same issue replaced my pump and still the light came on. I cannot afford to replace the engine bearings so i added a bottle of lucas and a bottle of 20w50 oil and no light, no problems.
