The only tool would be a spring compressor to remove the strut once out off will need it to compress the spring to release tension then remove the top nut and slide strut out.

Front wheel bearing?

Requires several special tools that most people do not own. Like and impact wrench, large 28-35mm socket, star sockets, torque wrench, ball joint spreader, etc. Cheaper to have someone else install it verses the cost in obtaining the correct tools.

Hello - I'm not too certain on any special tools for this project other than the typical wrenches, etc... However, I'd also like to plant this seed:

Your best bet is to get a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual for your year, make & model vehicle. You can obtain one for around $20 at your local auto parts store, otherwise, try your local library where you could check one out - if it's not at that branch, it might be transferred in is you ask. This will provide more (step by step) details than I could type into text here.
Be sure to call ahead to check availability at either place. These manuals are extremely helpful and I always buy one for each vehicle I own. There are some sites online which will provide e-copies or even access to a library of the manuals for a fee... I've not ventured into this zone, but may also be a very viable option.

How easy it to replace the front struts and read shocks on the 1998 lumina

If you have all the tools and some experience in front suspension work it is fairly easy. If you don't have a spring compressor for the struts do not try this at all for without the compressor to use the job is very dangerous.

Dont believe so. Maybe gear wrenches just to make things a little quicker/easier. Also bring rust penetrant and maybe presoak all nuts a day before. Keep vehicle jacked up under front control arm(for front job) and rear axle when you do rear. This is to keep tension off of the shocks when trying to remove.

are you changing the strut cartridge or the whole spring unit? if you are installing the whole unit, spring and all you will need no special tools, if not you will need a spring compressor

How to remove the top bolts from the rear shocks

bolts should be easily removed after breaking them loose. If someone replaced them and used nuts on the backside, it may present a problem & require cutting the heads off. Sometimes you can snake a distributor wrench above to grab nut but on most jeeps this is difficult because there isn't enough clearance. Really soak them down with good solvent at least twice several hours before attempting to remove.

You Must Put it UP On Jack Stands And Take Out the LOWER BOLT From Shock FIRST ,Drop Lower Control arm By Removeing Lower Ball Joint AND OUTER TIE ROD.There are are 3 Nuts On top where the Coil Spring Seats Remove Them, Remove Assembly The Same as A STRUT ASSEMBLY, YOU Must USE CAUTION Use Spring Compresion tool to Remove top Shock Nut. Replace front shock absorbers

My answer is not going to help you because not only do you need specialized equipment, but you will need special experience to perform this job.

You would be required to completely remove the entire front strut assembly from the car. It has to be safety set up on jacks. Once you have the strut assembly out of the car, special spring clamps are needed to compress the heavy spring that is part of the strut. These require very special clamps that compress the springs. If this is not done right, it can conceivably kill a person.

Once the spring has been removed, the strut it self must be removed from the strut housing using an impact wrench.

Once both sides are changed, the car must be realigned in the front end, otherwise the car will not steer or track properly.

Over all, this is a major job. These are not shock absorbers, as you would know them, but are called McPherson struts.

Front shocks on '02 Passat

need a special tools and maybe you can take it out, probably you can not put it back, because the new shock needs preassure to right position, then you can put back. some older cars are easy, please becareful.
