I had the same problem. I replaced all the bearing, races, all of them where bad. leaking seals. bearings had metal shavings in the oil. so i replaced them. still code 545 164. I found that the bolts that hold the abs module was not tight to to the frame(in the middle back of the truck). I tightened them up and , wow no more 545 164 on start up and after letting of the park brake go away. Tighten the abs module bolts to the frame dude. I think it a ground issue.
based on the age of the vehicle most likley the ABS module failed. Only way to know for sure is to get it diagnosed. There is nothing you can do at home without the proper tools. And no way can anyone guess accurately without testing. Codes are needed to proceed.
Yes this can affect the brake performance, when the light is on a fault code is stored in the ABS control module, u will need to find out what that code is, a special scanner is needed to access this code, most brake shops and of course the dealer can do this test.
This is common in the audi cars. It may be that your ABS module is failing or the the connector to the ABS pump located in the engine compartment on the drivers side, with black metal lines going into it. Their is a large black connector that sometimes needs to be unplugged and cleaned and plugged back in
as a rule of thumb every inch bigger you go, you want to go 10% lower on the aspect ratio. so the 195/65/15 will be 195/45/17 and the 205/60/15 will be 205/40/17. the 205/40/17 are a lot more common there for a wider selection and lower price. Good Luck
I had the same problem on my 89 200 turbo Quattro and after a close check on the plastic hose that it's attached to the air pump next to the battery I found a leak; it's been working fine since. I hope this helps. Dave
