Question about 2004 GMC Envoy

2 Answers

2004 GMC Envoy XUV SLT electronic tailgate will not unlatch. Regulator seems broken. I pushed window fully down by hand, to lowest position, climbed into rear & took off tailgate inside panel exposing multi-pin connector and glass. I made sure glass was all the way down, but tailgate eletronic latches, lay down or swing will not allow gate to open. Is there a way to jumper the pins on the connector to signal the interlock ot allow gate to open? Any mechanical way to unlock the gate to let it open? I can operate with the rear window down, just need to open the tailgate some how. Roof will not function due to the rear window being out of wack, but that doesn't make much difference anyway. Oh, Detroit and all dealers do not have a replacement regulator available. All are backordered, until??? Advise if you know where to get one. Tbanks for your help. Paul

I have taken off the main tailgate inside cover exposing the multipin connector. Is there a pin-out diagram, showing which contact to short to cause the computer to release the electronic door latches? I need to have the system think that the window is down all the way so the electronic door pads release the door. There should be a way to short circuit the pins so this happens.

There is a technical service bulletin regarding this problem with 2004 GMC envoy. Actually there are 3 separate issues with regards to the elecronic tailgate. The reason why the dealers are backordered is the part you want keeps failing after a time of being installed.

For the particular problem you have of the electronic latch not working, the bulletin recommends a inspection of the endgate connector C900. Look for the wires to be backed out of the connector or not properly crimped. To crimp you will need a crimping tool available at any electrical supply shop. The connectors can be had from the dealers.

The other solution referred to intermittent operation of the endgate but can apply in your situation also. For that, look for chaffing at the wire harness connectors for the endgate actuators located at the upper right and lower left latches. They have been found to be pinched up to 8 inches away from the actuators. In this situation it would be ideal to replace the connectors and install in a way so wires will not be pinched.

The other thing to look out for is dusty sensors. For this you will need to remove the tailgate trim panel and locate the 2 optical sensors on either side. You can feel them with your hand, they will be the size of a nickel. Clean all the dust under the trim. In addition to that you should open the switch and use contact cleaner to clean out any dust or debris inside there. There is no mechanical way to open the door once the electronic side has malfunctioned without damaging the door. I hope this helps.

In additon to that, the following pin controls the endgate window regulator down signal, pin 2. If you short pint 2 to ground the window should go down.

The endgate window regulator up signal is pin 3. Shorting this to ground should cause window to rise.

Check for 12 volts on pin 19.

The endgate window sensor signal 1 is on pin 8
Sensor signal 2 is on pin 7. Let me know if it works.

First step would be to use a scan tool and command the solenoids

then the second things, would be jumping the solenoid, but this may be tougher than you think without special jumper tools unless of course you do not care about destroying the connectors and/or wires

however, mechanical is easy...
disconnect the solenoid connectors
disconnect solenoid from the rods
pull rods and your gate will open

if this fails then your concern is in the latch assembly itself... which I do about 6 a year at our independent shop.... what a pain!

How to fix my rear tailgate window

check the fuse/relay. if it is neither of these check the switch with a multimeter. If you can hear the motor trying to move the glass when you try the switch it may be the regulator needs attention. It may be the motor needs to be replaced.

check fuse and relay along with the switch first then the regulator and motor afterwards. Replacing the small electronics is obviously easier than having to open up the tailgate to check the mechanics of the winedow.

Glass divider between passenger and truck bed does not roll up

I assume you have an XUV. Same thing happened to me a few months back. If the glass isn't broken ( and you would have heard it if it did), its the "midgate window regulator" that has failed. I recently installed one myself and it's not terribly difficult [couple of hours x 2 nights by myself - easier with another pair of hands] if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have a basic tool set. Here's a start on finding the part: https://www.google.com/#q=envoy%20xuv%20midgate%20regulator Google : "envoy xuv midgate regulator installation" and you'll be able to see a few examples.

Where do I get a tailgate window regulator for my envoy xuv?

Sorry but since it is that new it is going to be a dealer part only. Call the dealer and have them order one. It will cost you a few good dollars through the dealers.

2004 GMC Envoy XUV mid-gate window won't roll up

be sure the gate is fully closed or it will not roll up if it is firmly in place and still does not go up you will have to remove the cover and see if the actuator plastic has broken off from the switch, it also could be a bent rod and or the switch is bad. Check fuses as well just to be sure before going to all the other work to pull cover off. Hope this is helpful and thanks for using Fix-ya.

2004 envoy xuv tailgate problems, will not latch or open sideways. I have a 02 Envoy SLT the rear liftgate Dose not have power. the wipers dont work the Lock dont work I can not program my keyless entry....

I also have a 2004 GMC XUV. My gate would go down but not swing open. In trying to fix it, the gate then refused to go to the flat position.I have removed the cover plate on the gate and found the one of the solenoids loose from its mounting. Resetting the computer by disconnecting both battery leads and holding them together for ten seconds worked to restore function to the gate going flat, but the swing still does not work. I believe it is a bad solenoid or motor for the bottem left latch pin.

the actuators have a white stem that sticks out of the bottom of them. if you push up on the ones on the driver side it will open the back hatch for you.
