If it dont have an auto spring you need to loosen the bolts on the alternator and swing it in toward the engine, fit the belt then swing it out to tighten the belt before you do up the alt bolts NOT TOO TIGHT,

Loosen the vertical bolt on the tension bracket by turning left, then slide belt off pulleys when you have enough slack, use a tension guage to reinstall and tighten to proper tension.

How do you tighten the alernator belt on a 2000 kia sephia?

Unfortunately, Kia does not publish instructions in the service manual on how to adjust the belt tension. They do, however, publish bet tightening specifications. There are only two reasons that I can think of as to why they would not put this information in the service manual.
1. It is possible that instructions for tightening the belts are published in the Owner's Manual,
OR
2. They figure that it is so simple that if you have to ask, then you (a mechanic using the service manual) probably shouldn't be messing with it.

The service manual makes no mention of a spring or hydraulic type belt tensioner assembly, nor do the websites for O'Reilly's or AutoZone. So I would say that you must loosen the bolts on the alternator and there will most likely (knowing what I know about Kia) be a bolt-type adjusting screw that can be turned to add tension to the belt, then retighten the alternator bolts.

How do I replace the serpentine belt on a 1999 Kia Sephia?

1.8L Engine
  1. Using a belt tension gauge, measure the drive belt tension and compare with the following specifications:
    1. Alternator belt (new): 86-103 lbs. (383-461 N)
    2. Alternator belt (used): 68-86 lbs. (304-383 N)
    3. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (new): 110-132 lbs (491-589 N)
    4. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (used): 95-110 lbs. (422-491 N)

Fig. Using a tension gauge to measure the alternator belt tension - 1.8L engines (click HERE for zoom)

  2. Using the deflection method, apply moderate pressure (about 22 lbs) halfway between the pulleys, and compare with the following specifications.
    1. Alternator belt (new): 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm)
    2. Alternator belt (used): 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm)
    3. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (new): 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm)
    4. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (used): 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm)
  3. If the specifications fall outside the ranges given, adjust the belt as follows:
    1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt and adjusting bolt.
    2. Adjust the alternator to get the specified belt deflection.
    3. Tighten the bolts, then recheck the tension.

Hope helps.

I changed the P/S / AC belt on my 2000 Kia Sephia. I did not have to loosen anything, the belt went right on and is loose. How do I adjust it to make is right?

1-----wrong belt
2-----wrong routing
3-----brocken tensioner
4-----most newer car have automatic (spring loaded) tensioner
you would need to turn to allow belt to slip on
