Question about 1989 Acura Legend

1 Answer

When does the timing belt need to be replaced on the V6 89 Legend?...Is there anyway to tell if it has been done if the maintenance records are not available? We are thinking of buying this car for our daughter..is there anything we should know that would help in our decision?

HI, Acrua doesn't have recommended service mileage for your timing belt. You can check the condition of your belt by removing one of the upper belt covers and checking the wear of the belts cogs (teeth) you are looking for excessive space at the cam gear. If the belt is oil soaked it needs to be replaced and the leak fixed. I would recommend changing the water pump when you do have your timing belt done. Hope this helps.

If you think the noise is coming from the engine, you could take each belt off one at a time and run the engine to see if the noise stops.

If timing belt breaks and you try to start car does that mean you have to do a valve job

not all the time, Its very possible that a valve gets damaged when a timing belt breaks, however that depends on how the motor reacted when it happened,, trying to restart the car is a normal reaction when it just dies, It not starting is a good thing as far as more damage is concerned. I would replace the timing chain ( belt) make sure all the timing is set correctly and everything is aligned , once that's completed, have a compression check done on the vehicle, this will tell the story very quick on if you need more maintenance done.

When do you know that you need the timing belt change in a ford aspire 1995 model if you don't have the history of the car?

Honestly there is no way with out the maintence history. The timing belt is located under a cover bolted to the front of the motor. Typically the belt is replaced between 60,000 and 100,000 miles pending on what the OEM recomends. You could try to contact your local Ford dealer's service or parts dept. If you give them the VIN number for your vehicle (located on the dash or on the drivers door) they should be able to look up the maintence history for that vehicle done at the dealer. If the belt was replaced by the dealer they would have the record of it. Otherwise, your only other option is to take the timing belt cover off and inspect to see if it is worn out, but if your going to go thru that hastle, you might as well replace the belt anyway.

How can you tell if you timing belt was already done on a 1999 audi a4 2.8.?

unfortunately there is no official way to tell if a timing belt was done, even a belt a few months old shows signs of wear (teeth)....unless you are able to find out the service history, my very strong advice is to adhere to the timing belt motto..."if in doubt, do it anyway", as the breakage of the timing belt could mean serious consequences, if not,m thousands of dollars of damage.......save yourself, and if you cannot do it yourself, invest the money to have it done.

Does the timing belt need to be changed?

There is no real way of telling as there are cords buried in the rubber of the belt that break.Toyota says to replace it every 90,000 mi..I have seen them last longer but that would be your call.If you get it done you should also change the drive belts as they have to take them off and on anyway and you should only have to pay the parts. That is if they are original. Thanks for using fixya
