Question about 1988 Toyota Cressida

1 Answer

I have a 1988 Toyota Cressida with 143.000 miles and I have experience a problem with the transmission. The transmission is very sluggish in first gear for a few seconds and eventually picks up during take off. I've never changed the transmission oil because the car is 20 years old. The problem occurs after the trasmission gets warm. The expertise would be greatly appreciated in this matter.

Does sound to me like it is slipping. because the car is that old it is your choice how to proceed. have the transmission either repaired or replaced. of you can buy some transmission fluid thickener at autozone or even walmart i believe has it. it will keep it for slipping as much although this isn't a long term solution.

1988 toyota crissada, runs hot, idles to high.going 5 miles per hour and speedomter say 130 mile per hour, has very little power.

While the engine runs hot there is a possibility that the RPM sensor goes off and shows the wrong reading. First of all check the cause for the overheatting before we can go further.
Some tips were given in your earlier request.

You have not indicated the mileage the transmission has done so I will guess it is over 130,000 miles.

At anything over about 110000 miles you can expect the transmission to die and require replacement. From the symptoms you have described, and assuming the transmission fluid was at the minimum operating level, the auto transmission unit will need to be replaced.
