Question about 1998 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Engine Coolant leak problem 1998 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 110k miles Thought water pump had started leaking so replaced with new but leak still there. The leak appears to be coming from under the corner area. Am not able to see just where though. Hoping not head gasket. Someone mentioned to me "freeze plug". Am really wondering where those are on this model.

Got the plate off of the side of the engine sort of (only able to pull it out about 3 inches without taking the steering pump off) and there was a freeze plug right behind it and it still was wet. Hooked up air compressor to main radiator hose and had my son cover the other 2 and gave it a slight bump of air and antifreeze shot out of the plug like a super soaker. Next to get that thing out and replace it with an expansion plug I got tonight.

Use a mirror and trouble light , clean the engine and let dry the install a pressure tester, you should be able to locate the leak

Going to give that a try. Don't have a pressure tester though. Could I use an air compressor to put pressure on the system gradually? (sorry thought this was going here the first time.)

you could always run the engine till warm but its more difficult that way cause you may have to reach in hot areas

2000 sable is leaking coolant

can you see where the coolant is leaking from. Check the water pump weep hole. you might have to use a little mirror in order to look under the water pump. check all connections. If it just started leaking check to see if the hoses are not dryrotted, squeeze the hoses they should be firm. Give that a try, but sounds like the water pump

2000 GMC, 80200 miles, SLS; 6 Cyl 4.3L; When do I repalce the timing belt and water pump? If it brakes while I am driving will it mess up the valves?

The 4.3L is not an interference fit engine so a timing CHAIN failure will not result in additional damage. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it until over 100k. Replace the water pump when it fails. Usually the seals will start to leak and coolant will be seep from the "weep hole"
I hope this answers your question.

My 1995 Mercury Sable started overheating, and I thought it might be the thermostat. I replaced the thermostat and gasket, making sure to clean all of the old gasket from the housing and the head, I...

Is this the only place it leaks. These cars are notorious for head gasket & intake gasket leaks. Have the coolant system pressure tested for any other leaks. You also may have cracked the thermostat housing when the thermostat was not seated properly. Check the flow rate through the rad. The rad may be blocking up or the water pump impellor may be loose in the water pump. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Engine overheat and oils spots under the car this 2000 sable has only 50K miles and the engine overheats, coolant levels are ok, no leaks (coolant), there is also an oil leak 3 or 4 drops overnight as far...

Have the cooling system flushed and replace thermostat. For oil leak try some oil stop leak from auto store, they work on small leaks( will take a couple of days to work).

Water pump

Fill the radiator completely with coolant mixture. Let the engine warm up 10 to 15 mins. Is the upper radiator hose warm? If yes, then the water pump and thermostat are good. If all this works, then the leak is somewhere else. Hope this helps.
