Question about Chevrolet C1500

I had a problem shifting out of park (auto transmission) I discovered there is an electrical lock (operated by brake pedal?) on shifter. I disconnect lock and it shifts fine now. New problem is it sounds like power stearing is going bad. It makes a noise when turning and has a little vibration. Is this problem linked to the lock shifter because the truck still thinks it is in park?

Hi, noise and vibration from car when turning could be caused by many things, ball joints usually make clunking noises (usually one when turning and one when turning the wheel from turning), cv joints usually make a clicking noise and vibrate under load. Have it checked out, les schwab will do it for free (check it).

It could also be as a result of low Power Steering Fluid. You should refill it with the proper fluid as recommended by the manual.

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The shift lock solenoid is located within the floor shift control assembly with vehicles equipped with floor shift.

When the brake pedal is not applied, the BCM turns the control voltage output of the shift lock control solenoid OFF, de-energizing the shift lock control solenoid. Ignition ON, while pressing the brake pedal, observe the scan tool Brake Applied Output Signal parameter. The reading should be ON with the brake pedal pressed.

Press the brake pedal, the vehicle operator should be able to move the shifter lever out of the park position.
With the vehicle moving over 5 km/h (3 mph), the vehicle operator should not be able to move the shift lever into the reverse position.

My 2003 Oldsmobile altero gets stuck and i have to jiggle the shifter or leave it set for a min befor if will go from park to reverse ect.. Just got the car yesterday


Your problem is more then likely with the Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control .This is a safety thing . Has a switch , wiring and a electrical solenoid .
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
• The park/neutral position switch

Sorry to here your having a problem with it already .
There are diagnostic step to find the problem , involves using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter an using a wiring diagram to locate test points in the circuit . Plus you will need to take parts of your vehicle apart to get to those test points . The most likely part to fail is the park neutral safety switch . The contacts wear inside after hundreds of times of moving the shifter . But without testing this is just a guess .

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. With the transmission in the PARK position, the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, mechanically locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.

My 2007 Lincoln MKZ gear shifter is getting stuck in park and comes out after trying a little while, not every time but its increasing more and more.


On your vehicle there is a shifter interlock system ,it's a safety feature . Doesn't allow shifter to be put into gear if your foot isn't on the brake pedal .

Holden cruze 2009 key stuck in the ignition won't go to off position , can't get it out of park .What is the problem ?


Is it shifter on the floor ?
Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator
If the vehicle is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, it has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator's purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a ignition lock cylinder control actuator , and a park position switch that is located in the A/T shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

GM had problems with these ! Has a TSB - technical service bulletin !

Replaced shifter on a cobalt , broken plastic part inside , wouldn't press on micro switch to disengage ! Found replacement shifter at auto slavage yard .$20.00 US

Fuse for brake lights keeps blowing out, shifter won't go into gear


Your vehicle has a safety system that won't let you take it out of park unless you have the brake pedal pressed ! Your brake switch could be shorted inside causing fuse to blow !
Shift Interlock System A brake/shifter interlock mechanism prevents shifting the transmission out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal (2455) is applied. The system consists of the following components:
  • an actuator activated by the key interlock assembly and brake pedal pressed input.
  • necessary wiring.
The system operates as follows:
  • The actuator is energized when the ignition switch is turned to RUN, locking the transmission range selector lever in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is applied and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the shift lock actuator is deactivated.
  • The transmission range selector lever can be moved out of the PARK position.
The ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719) locks the transmission range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. It also requires the selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

park lock out feature;. its broken , they do that. (BTSI system)
got A/T? or M/T both auto and stick shift have lockout.

there is a park lockout DEFEATER on most cars, (never on new cars,due to federal bs)

this feature (pain) has many failure points.
any cable that jams, there are 2 , one to tranny or ignition
switch. and the brake solenoid unlocker in shift handle.
and the button, to unluck shifter, brake switch (no brake lights/)
to diagnosis it is easy , dismantle the console at shifter
then disconnect cables to find if one is stuck, (easy huh?)
and defeat the solenoid, by hand or 12v applied. and check the button
that it does in fact release.
NOT PARK LOCKOUT: (for if not on flat ground?)
reason 2 , driver, parked on a hill with tire to curb and did so
not setting brakes first (or bad ebrake ) and now the tranny parking
pawl is jammed , opps. so wiggle the steering and wiggle shifter,
or have some one push car forward (parked up hill on right) to release
parking pawl. (or gorilla it, ask bubba to muscle it out of park.)
if down hill , well, you get the idea..... pain.. gotta love A/Ts not.

Gear shifter sticks sometimes in park on 2003 Lincoln Navigator


You could have a shifter interlocker system problem !
Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents the shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator mounted at the base of the steering column or on the floor shifter mechanism. If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is on unless the brake pedal is depressed.

Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the transmission external control.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage; refer to the following chart:

    GO to A5 .

    No
    SERVICE circuit 729 (RD/WH) for open. RETEST the system. A5 TEST BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SWITCH
    • Measure resistance of brake pedal position switch while open (OFF) and closed (ON).
    • Is the resistance of switch greater than 10 K ohms while OFF and 5 ohms or less while ON?
    Yes
    GO to A6 .

    No
    INSTALL a new brake pedal position switch. TEST the system for normal operation. A6 CHECK CIRCUIT 810 (RD/LG) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
    • Disconnect: Shift Lock Actuator C2008.
    • Measure resistance of circuit 810 (RD/LG), pin C2008-2.
    • Is the resistance 10 K ohms or less?

    SERVICE circuit 810 (RD/LG) for short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.

Transmission problem with 2001 Ford Escort


Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock.Here's how it works:You put your foot on the brake pedal,the brake pedal switch sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on your shifter.The solenoid unlocks the shifter,and you remove it from Park.When the interlock doesnt work,it's usually the interlock solenoid mounted on the shifter malfunctioning,however the brake pedal switch,or wires to and from can also be at fault.
