Hi, its sounds like its on the way out you should be getting more than 13v coming from it to maintain the battery they start giving less back when they are on the way out, so it sounds like its time to get it replaced, most places will give you some money back on your old unit as they have them re-built so ask about this when buying new alt.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

plz remember to rate my post as i have pages of posts that are going unrated, thanks

Lincoln vantage 400 fluctuating amperage while idling. Could it be bad brushes or the motherboard ?

Could be a faulty voltage regulator internal to the alternator. May also be the charge gauge. Have the charging system tested. If voltage stays steady when tested, chances are a problem on the gauge side. If voltage fluctuates during testing, possible alternator problem and gauge ok

Alternator problems

If you have a volt gauge in the car it should read to 14 when running. If it is a light it will be glowing slightly. If you start the car and disconnect the battery the car should stay running. If it dies then it is a bad alternator.

I have a 99 Ford Expedition I was coming home and the battery light came on. Went to the part stor and put in a new battery, now my heater won't turn on and my light don't turn on and my gauges jump around....

This sounds more like a faulty alternator. Sometimes an alternator can still produce adequate voltage and amperage to keep everything running, but they are governed by a voltage regulator. If the regulator goes bad, the alternator may have little of no output, or it will not limit itself properly causing gauge problems, and various light on the dash to not work or sporadically come on.
I'd take the vehicle to have the alternator tested at least.
Don't settle for one of the part store tests, they won't give you all the information you will need. A properly working alternator should charge anywhere between 13-14.6 volts and depending on the vehicle 90-150 amps.
I hope this helps in some way

In march tuck wouldn't start mechanic replaced alternator truck ran good, battery light stayed on had test done at O'reillies Last week drove to Port Aurthur & on the way back gauges stopped...

You need to get a digtal voltage meter (about $15) and check it out yourself-readings at the battery should be 12.5 volts after sitting overnight. Once you start it, the readings at the battery terminals should go up to almost 15 volts when first started, then gradually drop down to around 14.2 volts-I would bet either your battery is bad, or your battery is bad and your alternator has failed trying to supply power to a bad battery-either way, your mechanic should not have allowed the battery light to stay on after changing out the alternator without finding out what was wrong-he did not fix it.

Have your voltage regulator replaced. Hopefully your alternator wasn't damaged too badly. If the alternator light stays on after the regulator is replaced, you will need to replace your alternator too.

Ey sounds like you have a bad alternator so you should test to see if the alternator is still good or bad by let the engine running then pop the hood opened and disconnected the ground cable off from the battery terminal so when you do that and if the engine dies then you have bad alternator but if the engine still running after disconnect then your alternator is still good

Instrument panel.

There is a bad connection at the cluster, remove the cluster, and check the plug in to the cluster,it is a bad connection. Also check the alternator to make sure there is enough volts present, with everything on,lights,ac/heater,on high,it should read at the battery, while engine running,13.65 volts,to 14.25 volts,if it is any lower, replace the alternator.

I believe that the alternator brushes could be going bad...if this happens again take your alternator off and take it to an electric shop and have it tested
