Question about 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

1 Answer

I have 2 wires coming from the positive battery terminal. The first wire goes underneath the car to the starter. The second wire is separated at what appears to be a fuse link which goes into the drivers fender wall. Does anyone know what this second wire is for? Everything appears to be working fine. Please advise the purpose of this second wire if anyone knows. Thanks!

Hi, this second wire is a permanent live feed for inside the car, the things it runs are things like the stereo all its their for is so the stereo dont lose any stations that you have stored into the memory other than that their isnt much else it runs, maybe the clock, you could check by seeing what isnt working when the key is out, check the clock and stereo, if the stereo works with the key out then it must have its own live feed.

the chances are it wont work and you will lose the preset saved stations.

i hope that has given you some idea of what its for.

please let me know if you need further assistance.

plz can you rate this post as i have pages of unrated posts, thanks

Starter motor relay location

The spot depends on the vehicle. It is usually on fender near battery, or most common - right on the starter. Just follow the thick red power wire from battery. If it goes to starter directly, then switch on starter. If it goes to unit bolted under hood then that is relay. There is usually a second wire that goes to the power distribution box (under hood fuses) but that is not the correct wire. It will be the other big wire from battery positive terminal.

Three BLK wires are attached to the positive battery terminal: one goes directly to the "START MOTOR". A second contains the alternator fusible link and connects to the alternator. The third goes to the engine room junction block.

Starter wire placment

on the solenoid there are 2 major terminals one terminal will have a large wire under the nut going into the starter and one will not have anything. The battery lead (positive) will go on the terminal that has no wire . A small wire will go to the very small terminal between the larger ones. Starter wire from ignition switch. Circuit is power from the ignition switch energises the solenoid which closes a set of contacts inside the solenoid and allows the current from the battery to flow out the second terminal down into the starter to turn the armature.

Usually one is small enough to fit on the small terminal and the rest fit on with the battery cable.
The small purple wire from the key switch goes on the terminal marked S.
You could do a continuity test and check it with the battery disconnected by checking it back to the neutral safety switch.

the large wire is the wire that goes directly to the battery positive, the other smaller wires on this same terminal go to feed different circuits on the car, these wires are fusible link wires, on the other terminal one wire comes from the ignition switch to activate the starter solenoid to start the car.

Can't get the starter to engage due to wiring problem

The positive battery cable goes to the starter solenoid.(the big terminal). Also there will be a 12ga purple wire that goes to the "S" terminal of the solenoid. The "S" terminal is the small terminal on the solenoid that is closest to the engine. The "S" terminal wire comes from the ignition switch. When the switch is turned to the start position it sends voltage through this purple wire to activate the solenoid which activates the starter. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Starter or coils, I would check the starter first since you can take it out and take it to a local autoshop like Kragen and get it tested for free. If that doesnt work then check the coils, on the very front of the engine near the radiator on the driver side
