Hi the usual cause of a car not turning over is down to the starter motor failing if you hear a faint clicking noise coming from the bottom of the engine then the chances are the starter needs replacing.

first of all check the battery is charged enough to start the car turn the head lights on to high beam then try starting the car if the lights go off or dim then you have flat battery if they stay bright the battery is ok.

if you have an immobiliser on the car check that the warning light is going off try putting the key in the ignition the other way round or if you have a fob that opens the central locking then try holding this as close as you can to the ignition barrel if it then starts you need the key fob replacing, or if the security light stays on you have problem with the key and need it replacing.

Lets go for the starter, if you have a manual gear box then what you can do to check the car runs is to put the car in 2nd gear and get a couple of people to push you with the ignition on then when your moving quite fast let the clutch up and see if it starts, if it does then the starter will need replacing, if its an auto box then you cant do this.

how ever their is another trick you can try, locate the starter motor by following the live wire from the battery now if you see the bigger part of the starter give this a couple of hits with a hammer doing this will usually get it started some of the time but dont rely on it working for long.

let me know how you get on or what you find out ok

Check your battery voltage, sound to me like your battery cold cranking amps is low. Its enough the power the lights but not turn the engine over. Have the battery replace

Engine won't turn over

This is most likely the battery, sometimes you can have enough power for dome lights and radio, but not enough "Cranking Amps" to start the vehicle. Charge it, or take it to an Auto zone or something. They will charge it and test it for free.

You can check 2 things. 1., have someone in the car to turn the key to the start position. Tap the starter with a small hammer and see if it cranks. If it does, replace the starter. 2., have the battery tested as well as the connections to the battery. Corrosion builds and can cause heavy resistance to heavy loads(like starting). These are the 2 most likely causes. Let me know if you need further assistance.

My 2002 Grand Am will not start, when ignition is turned on nothing happens with the starter, not even a sound from the starter, everything else works. I took off the starter and had it checked and it...

I have a 2002 Grand Am also. I had this same problem twice. The first time it happened, the battery was still working but was not strong enough to crank the car or make any noise under the hood at all. All electrical stuff worked though (lights, radio, etc). So i bought a new battery and everything was back to normal.

The 2nd time this happened, the passlock system was shot (the passlock system is a type of security device the car has installed in it.) When i inserted the key, everything worked, but nothing coming from the engine. I had to take the car to a dealership and get it replaced for around $400. If you look online you can find other ways to avoid the dealership and fix it yourself, but that could result in making something else not work as well.

Hope this helps in some way.
