This may be due to worn engine bearings , this would be like a knocking noise, a tapping noise could be worn lifter or rocker arm adjustment.

Check motor mounts and take it some where to check alignments in steering or make sure nothing is loose in engine compartment like belt(s) and bolts

Knocking noise near front of engine

On a very cold start (eg winter) older Subs often make knocking noise from the LHS of the engine. This is actually quite normal and is a "feature" of the oil paths in the engine. It goes away once the engine is warm.

Might also be the cam belt hydraulic sensor working loose. The tensioner pivot bolt can be done too light or fitted clumsily, and it strips the thread. If it gets too loose, the belt can jump teeth and bend valves.

My 93 Mercury Topaz has had a loud rattling noise on the right side of the engine for over a year and has gotten louder with time. I man at a gas station told me he had the same noise with his Ford Tempo...

A mechanic would use a stethoscope to listen for the source of the noise.
If it is a loose balancer, you normally remove the motor mounts and support the engine from the bottom to gain access to the bolt.
It would be advisable to take the bolt out and use some locktite on the threads.

The pulley that the fan is connected to and which the belt goes around is loose and making noise. Is it a bearing?

If the pulley is loose and the bolts are tight, chances are the water pump bearing has failed.

The problem relates to 2005 M5 E60. It makes a clack-clack sound when cranking - and only when cold. The sound is as if it is in synchronizationIt with the cranking ciclus - sound is coming from Engin...

It could be important and so it should be checked/located by killing the ignition and cranking the cold engine while someone experienced looks and listens in the engine compartment.

It is less stressful and easier to ignore a noise that is known not to matter...

I have a knocking noise, that sounds like it is coming from the right side of the engine. I took it to the dealership and they told me the oil was low and that it should take care of the noise, it didn't....

TWO mechanics and they can't identify the problem, just throw parts at it? This could be caused by many things. If the noise occurs all the time, i.e. even when idling, that's something in the engine. Try this: using a LARGE (say 12" long) screwdriver, place the tip on the engine, and the handle on your ear. The screwdriver acts like a stethoscope. You may be able to locate the noise location more precisely. If the noise is a light ticking, that could be a worn or maladjusted tappet. If its a heavy and loud knock, its something more serious. Loose front pulley bolts, AC compressor failure, loose alternator bolts all come to mind. Look for a local expert on your make of car, obviously NOT the dealer.
