Question about BMW 325

2 Answers

I have a 1987 325i - I replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor because the car had spasmodic asthma attacks (it would seem as if it was having air cut off and would slow down erractically). The MAFS was found to be defective and I just replaced it again. A few days later the same symptoms occured (which lessened if the a/c was turned off). It happens intermittently (sometimes the car drives perfectly and then it has its "asthma attack"). I did replace the ECU about two years ago. What next?

It is clearly electronic as it is intermittant - plugs and wires are all good.

BTW - it was the ignition wire set

Have you tried cleaning out the throttle body? A little bit of soot in there can cause problems. Also change fuel filter, plugs and wires and make sure all injectors are getting power

Hi

If the MAFS replacement wont do any good then change your plugs and plug wires out.
Also check all vacuum lines as well for leaks, cracked or broken hoses - some transmissions have vacuum lines as well.

If it's equipped with coil packs:

have them (if more than one) tested at a parts dealer. If none are bad then check the modular that sits just under the coil pack(s). If it is melted (white), bubbly, then it needs replaced.

If this is fine, and the packs are fine - have the alternator and battery tested. To test the alternator yourself first, start engine, then remove both terminals from battery - if car dies, alternator is bad. If not, it's good and the battery may be bad.

See your local auto parts dealer for diagnostics test to detect any codes for troubleshooting. This will more accurately pin point what is or may be causing this to happen if none of the above are the culprits.

Have the diagnostics test performed before purchasing any parts (other than fuel and air filter - as it never hurts to do these).

If the car is equipped with a distributor {instead of coil pack(s)} replace the cap and rotor - and consider replacing the coil, plugs and wires.

Again, have a diagnostics test performed at your local parts dealer.

Would a problem be caused to use a 2003 Suzuki Esteem Mass Air Flow Sensor on a 2002 since it seems to be working great

They have to be exactly the same part electrically, etc

No way to know that unless the part number & application is the same

Your cars pcm won't have proper air flow readings if you don't
have the correct sensor

Are they the same,Don't know, that is up to you to research

My golf 2001 tdi after 3000 rpm sometimes he cuts the acelerator

Could be a few things. IS the check engine on? Could just be a bad mass air flow sensor. Or a seized wastegate. Yuo can start by trying to unplug the mass air flow sensor. If it runs better it could be just that. Just make sure to remove and clean the lower air filter box change the air filter and the snow screen which is located next to the battery where the air enters. These always are blocked. If it runs ok (not perfect change the mass air flow.
