Question about Honda Pilot

Cruise control not working suddenly. I had the brake light switch replaced a few weeks ago because the gear was stuck in park. Sometime after this the cruise stopped working, but I can't really say it was immediately after because I didn't notice. I had the mechanic who replaced the switch check it again to make sure the wires were hooked up and he said it was. The cruise light does not come on within the pushbutton switch nor does the cruise control engage with the wheel controls. The horn does work and I checked fuse 6.

i checked this just now. Doesn't this same button also control the brake lights and parking gear lock?

In any event, it seems to be fine, and I can hear the actuator clicking as I push on the brake pedal so it seems to be working ok. I also tried manually putting the button with my finger as far as it could go, and i looked to see if the cruise control light comes on in the pushbutton and it did not.

Am i looking at the right switch?

The speed sensor is going bad. Check and replace this part first. If it still does not come on after you replace the speed sensor then you will need to replace the cruise control module

Hello! Check on the back of the brake pedal arm for a plastic button that presses into a hole in the arm...This button makes contact with the switch that controls the cruise control...Buttons have a habit of either breaking or falling out...Replacement cost is well under $5...Guru................saailer

Hello! I suspect that the Cruise Control Main Switch is defective...I would rather test it before replacing...Do you have and can you operate a multimeter? Let me know and we will test the switch...Saailer

  • pwareham Aug 25, 2010

yup, i can test that. Wouldn't it be easier to just test all the 12v inputs right at the cruise control actuator? i.e. look for the switch closure, the brake light closure, etc at the pins of the cruise control actuator?

Hello! Test procedure for main switch and brake pedal switch...If this test bad, there isn't much reason to continue...Without input cruise control will be inoperative...

Black/Yellow wire from the circuit side of fuse #6...+12 volts (hot at all times)...Back of main CC switch...Pin #1 (Black/Yellow)...+12 volts (hot at all times)...Connect + probe to the Light Green wire ...
    - probe to ground...+12 volts when you close the switch (Leave switch closed)...Light Green wire to Pin #1 brake pedal switch (normally closed) +12 volts...Also Light Green from same point to CC Actuator Pin #7...+12 volts...Other side of brake switch (pin# 4) becomes a Gray wire and connects to CC Actuator on Pin # 11...Also +12 volts...

    Send results........................Saailer

actually, i found a diagram and metered out all of the switched 12V connections at the cruise control actuator. Everything metered find and the 12V signals were changing with the brake switch and the main cruise control switch, so that rules out any external problem. I thought that the cruise control actuator/computer was bad but it turns out that just taking out the connector and poking around seemed to resolve the problem. The cruise control is now working on the road. Although the lamp in the main switch is NOT illuminating so I believe that is burned out!

One major problem fixed, one very minor problem remains.

Hello! great...Connection pins; On switch and on connector are oxidized...Radio Shack sells a product called DeOxit...$16...Two small spray cans...It's the best no-contact electronic cleaner...Spray connections...Cleans in seconds...As to the bulb...Nothing more than a 12 volt led...The Shack may have one...

Would you be so kind as to re-rate my solution...................Saailer

2001 mercury Cougar is in park; tried several times to move it out of gear and no luck. Tranny fluid full. A few months ago had tranny fluid pan gasket replaced. Has been driving fine up til today.

If it's stuck in park , problem with gear interlock system ! This is a safety system that will not allow gear shifter to be move with out foot pressing on the brake pedal . Do the brake light's work ? Could be a bad switch or wiring problem or shift interlock solenoid or maybe even a control module ! http://autoshop101.com/forms/h18.pdf

I have a 2000 Mercedes E430 base sedan. Last week I replaced the brake light switch because it was out and it solved the problem to the point that I can now put my car into gear and drive it, however, as...

Brake light switch problem may cause the ESP / BAS lights to illuminate.

Common symptoms of a bad
Mercedes brake light switch.
  • Car stuck in Park.
  • ABS ESP ETS lights come on.
  • Can not move the shifter from Park to Drive.
  • Brakes Defective Warning on Instrument Cluster
  • Car won't shift gears. Stuck in 2nd gear, limp mode.
  • Brake lights don't work. (Brake light switch can still be defective even if the brake lights work. Checking the brake light operation is not a good test.)
  • ESP, BAS, ABS lights turn on. Car won't shift properly. Stuck in gear.

TEST: To test your new brake light switch: Turn you car off to reset the ABS light. apply the parking brake. and start the car in neutral or park without using the brake. if the problem is the brake light switch... the light will only come on when you press the brake pedal.

If you replaced the brake light switch and the light is still on you should check a few other things such as:

  • Fuses and Relays
  • ABS pump
  • ABS wheel speed sensor
  • Brake Fluid Level
  • Get an advanced scanner to read trouble codes.

NOTE: ** You may need a MBZ scan tool to reset the error code which was stored in the ECU because of the bad brake light switch.

Parking Brake Light won't turn off, Cruise Control won't engage

Get down and look at parking brake assembly, If you see an electrical connector, unplug it, see if that helps? If it doesn't help or causes other issues just plug it back in.
Of course that isn't the proper fix. If something wrong with parking brake assembly, get it checked out.

My Accord's shifter is stuck in ''Park'' ; Cruise doesn't work now

Most likely are. Check to see if your brake switch performs both functions. Does it do the cruise and the brake/park lock.
