Question about 2002 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

'02 Explorer. I had the fuel pump changed because it wouldn't start. They have installed the new pump, but not anything else. When key is turned over, no sound comes from the new pump either. We are stumped.

Does the Explorer start and run? If no then this new pump may be debatable. However, if the vehicle runs then you should be happy to have a silent pump.

SOURCE: 98 explorer fuel pump problem.

Are you sure? You have to determine if it isn't getting fuel (test pressure) or not getting spark.

Other posibilitie is the "fuel cutoff switch", this fuel reset is underneath the right kick panel, behind glove box, maxi fuses #3, under hood in the power box and also has fuel pump relay #6 in power box. How to reset? With your ignition key in the OFF position check to see if any gas is leaking ( smell of gas ) if none , press the reset button down on the switch ( the switch is located in your right front passenger footwell , by the kick panel , just above the carpet. Turn your ignition key to the RUN position for a few seconds, and then turn your ignition key OFF again re-check for any gas leaks ( smell of gas ). If none, go ahead and start your Explorer. Check it and confirm.

We will have to pinpoint what the engine is missing.
- Spark
- Fuel
- Compression

All three of these are tested when the engine is being cranked over. There are two way of checking for fuel. Fuel pressure and fuel trigger. Both are very important and must be present for the car to start. Fuel pressure is self explanatory. You just hook up the gage and see what the reading is. Fuel trigger is check with a noid light. The injector gets unplugged and the noid light gets plugged in to the injector clip. With the engine cranking over, this light must blink. This is the signal to the injectors from the computer. You can have all the fuel pressure in the world, but it wont matter if the injector is not pulsing gas into the cylinder like it should! Compression tester, spark tester, fuel pressure gage and noid light are all accessible at your local auto store. All three tests play a very important part in diagnosing a no start condition.

If your vehicle was towed, check the fuel pump intertia switch located near the top of the passenger side kick panel.
if you changed the key, you will be having an antitheft problem.
you could try putting an original key at the lock cylinder while turning the new key, it may allow it to start... if so, new key will require programming, or have the new lock cylinder coded to the old keys.

TURN THE KEY SWITCH TO THE ON POSITION ,WITH THE GAS LID DOOR OPEN DO YOU HEAR THE HUMM OR WHINE OF THE FUEL PUMP,YOU MAY HAVE TO GET A 2 PERSON SO THAT YOU CAN PUT YOUR EAR RIGHT UP TO THE FUEL DOOR TO HEAR THE HUM,IF THEIRS NO HUM ITS NOT GOING TO START.THE TANK THEN MUST BE REMOVED AND A NEW 250$ FUEL PUMP WILL NEED TO BE INSTALLED.THE PUMPS ARE ALSO DIFFERENT BETWEEN 2DR AND 4DR. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: To gain access to the fuel pump, it is necessary to remove the fuel tank.
  1. Depressurize the fuel system and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
  2. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump attaching flange, to prevent it from entering the tank during service.
  3. Turn the fuel pump locking ring counterclockwise using a locking ring removal tool and remove the locking ring.
  4. Remove the fuel pump and bracket assembly.
  5. Remove the seal gasket and discard it. To install:
  6. Put a light coating of heavy grease on a new seal ring to hold it in place during assembly. Install it in fuel tank ring groove. Fig. 1: Fuel pump and sending unit used on the Regular Cab Ranger pick-up 89685g02.gif

  7. Insert the fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank, then secure it in place with the locking ring. Tighten the ring until secure.
  8. Install the tank in the vehicle.
  9. Install a minimum of 10 gallons of fuel and check for leaks.
  10. Install a pressure gauge on the throttle body valve and turn the ignition ON for 3 seconds. Turn the key OFF, then repeat the key cycle five to ten times until the pressure gauge shows at least 30 psi. Reinspect for leaks at the fittings.
  11. Remove the pressure gauge. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Were can i locate the fuel regulator on my 2002 explore. change the fuel pump explore still wont start. still acts like its not getting fuel

before you do anything else , scan your vehicle with an OBD 2 scanning tool . If you don't get any codes: make sure your fuel pump cycles on for a few seconds when you turn the key from off to on, (you can hear it huming}...if it does then replace the in line fuel filter. if your fuel pump doesn't cycle for a few seconds when the key is turned on, check your fuel cut off (vehicle rollover )safety switch and reset it if necessary. finally , check the fuel pump relay circuit.

My explorer ran out of gas, i filled it up to about a half a tank, now it just turns over but wont start

if it's fuel injected, look on the fuel rail for a schrader valve--looks just like a valve stem on a tire but shorter.remove cap, again just like on a tire.turn key to on-push valve stem in as if to let air out if you get air, then gasoline, you have just bled the system.replace cap, start car.if you get no gas, remove gas tank cap, turn on key, listen for ""hum'' of fuel tank.no hum, check fuel pump.modern[plastic] fuel pumps will self destruct if run dry, even for a short time.
