Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

I had oil on my engine so I used an engine degreaser/cleaner to clean it and got a little carried away when I rinsed it with the water. When I started my car it drove for about 100 ft and then died. I was able to get it started after a few sputters. It runs fine now but my check engine light is on.

Most likely you got water problems. the distributor may have water in it. you can choose to take the cap off and dry it yourself now, or just let it set for 5 or 6 hours and it will start again. if that light does'nt go off, take the positive cable off the battery for 5mins and the computer will reset itself. it's happened to the best of us. i hope this helps,,good luck!!

2000 ford taurus oil fumes under the hood

My suggestion is to make sure there's no oil spilled from putting any in. Take it to a car wash leave engine ON stay away from fuse box and battery tray. Use the engine degreaser mode and wash your engine rinse thoroughly with the rinse mode after. If the problem still occurs. Check to see around top of motor if any smoke is coming out or if fluid is coming from valve cover. If so replace the valve cover gasket which is usually cheap.

2003 mazda tribute giving off bad smell and smokes after driving for about 30 minutes.

By bad smell I take it that you are noticing a smell in the car while driving and not from the rear of the car. I'll also assume that the smoke is coming from under the hood and not the tail pipe. Sounds like you have an oil leak around the top of the engine that is dripping onto the exhaust pipe. I recommend that you clean the engine compartment with a good degreaser like Purple Power or Super Clean. Spray the entire engine down, everywhere you can. Let the degreaser sit for 10-15 minutes and rinse off with a strong stream of water. Repeat as necessary until the engine is free of visible grease and oil. Then buy some engine oil UV dye and put that into the engine oil filler. Save some for the power steering pump (about 10th of a bottle is enough). Get some UV Glasses and a light used for detecting air conditioner leaks. Run the car for 15 minutes down the road. Stop and look for the florescent dye trails to find your leak. This is the hardest part of fixing this problem. After the leak is found the repair is usually minor.

I have a 2005 Ford F350 diesel with 6.0 powerstroke I have been having problems with a misfire I believe it is fuel injectors. Due to water in the fuel system. i started using diesel clean fuel injector...

Diesel clean will help, but it won't remove all the water in your fuel. Try some water dispersant fuel treatment as well.

I'm guessing your water in fuel light came on? It this happened for any length of time, your fuel water seperator sensor could of shorted out, this will cause a misfire, and will have to be replaced. There are several other things with the 6.0 that could be the problem, but i would start with this first. The back pressure control valve sticking and the pressure sensor out of calibration are also common problems on this engine.

Good luck, i hope this helps.

How to stop it from leaking oil

Where does it leak from? If you can't tell because oil is everywhere, get a can of engine degreaser, clean the oil, hose it down and then run it for few miles to see where the oil is coming out from. When cleaning the engine with degreaser and water be sure to cover the electronics with some water proof material, like a nylon bag. Once you see the leak, area, please post the question again with more details. thanks

I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler with the 4.0 liter engine. Was running fine until I decided to clean the engine. After degreasing and rinsing the engine and under hood, I let it idle. It ran for five minutes...

You could have gotten water in the distributor, remove distributor cap and remove as much of the water that you can, then get a can of wd-40 and spray all in there and the inside of the cap, install cap back on, should start up.

How should i wash off my engine?

Spray on oven cleaner is great for cutting through the oil. Just be careful not to remove paint with it. Fantastic type cleaner works for thinner oil accumulations. Or brush with gasoline. Use a toothbrush or barbecue brush. Then, I've always just hosed off my engine with a forceful jet of water. It hasn't caused a problem, even when I've started the engine wet. But to be careful, last time I dried the ignition coils and spark plug wires before starting the engine.

Not a problem but more like a question or opinion...

Don;t pour that on the valve train! They make an internal engine degreaser that you add to the oil the last 100 miles before an oil change to get rid of that sludge. If you have alot of sludge you need to change oil more often.
