Question about 1998 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

My 2.4 sunfire has a serious engine problem and I am trying to take off the valve covers but it seems the timeing gear is attached to the valve cover. The engine poops and sputters thru the intake and I was told this is a bent push rod or a valve problem. Is this hard to repair?

The timing is not adjustable. You must get the system scanned for codes to diagnose this problem.

Where is the egr valve on a 2.4l pontiac engine

Hi there:
The EGR is located on the front side of the engine. You will need to remove the air cleaner assembly the covers the front side of the engine. After this is removed, you will be able to see the EGR valve.

Where do i find the pcv valve on a 97 sunfire

The PCV (Positive Cranckase Ventilation valve) is going to be on the valve cover. Usually has a rubber hose about 5/8 coning off it and running to the intake.

This is for the 2.2L OHV engine 1997 and earlier... according to Haynes, the 1998 & later 2.2L OHV engines "have an oil/air seperator inside the valve rocker arm cover that requires no maintenance. 2.3L and 2.4L OHC engines are equipped with an oil/air seperator that is attached to the side of the block above the oil filter."

As you are standing in front of the car facing the engine, if you look down at the top of the engine it is in the back lefthand corner of the valve cover. You will see a weird looking 1-1 1/4 inch star shaped nut on a round thing that sort of slopes up out of and toward the back of the engine & has about a 4" tube sticking out of it connecting to the fuel injector? assembly. If it is on too tight to loosen with by hand use a channel locks pliers to loosen it. Then pull the tube out & the pcv valve will be inserted into the end of the tube. Simply replace & hand tighten the nut.

Hope helped (remember comment and rated this).

There is no valve adjustment for that engine, Hydraulic lifters, You might remove the valve cover and see if you have a rocker arm loose

I have pontiac sunfire 96 model 2.2L engine. At parking and at stop position while in gear its rpm sometime jumps to 1400 for a momement then comes constant. Also when starting from stopped position engine...

check to see if valve cover gasket is leaking oil onto spark plugs...causing a misfire; if so replace valve cover gasket; spark plugs and spark plug wires.

Pontiac sunfire valve noise

If it's a ticking noise that speeds up with the speed of the engine, it's a worn valve lifter.
You can try tightening it down by taking the valve cover off and tightening the bolt on the rocker arm, but don't tighten it too much, you will end up with other problems.

05 sunfire--I have loud ticking coming from engine 2.2 eco tech--have taken off valve cover for visional check, noticed nothing broken or abnormal, seems to have plenty of oil up there. Any ideas?...

You can check where it is by using short piece of hose and listening at the other end (like dr's stethescope). I would assume that it is in the valve train system. Hope this helps, Rick

1995 sunfire wont shift gear

There were two different automatic transmissions in the Sunfire that year, the 3 speed trans designated the 3T40,and the 4 speed trans designated the 4T40.If your car has the 4 speed trans, there will be a circle around the "D" on your gear selector indicator. The 3 speed trans will not have a circle around the "D".The 3 speed trans works off of a cable called the TV or Throttle Valve cable. This cable should be checked where it engages the throttle body around the area where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle body,on the engine. If the cable becomes disconnected for whatever reason, the trans will not shift out of 1st gear in most cases. If the car has the 4 speed trans, this model trans is totally electronic, and the vehicle should have the codes pulled out.For every trouble code, there is a diagnostic route to follow to repair the malfunction.
