Question about Volkswagen Passat

5 Answers

I am having troublw with my car not starting. i have just installed a used engine from a junk yard and it will not fir up. engine will turn over but will not start. i have put a new fuel pump in and i have tested it bt running a wire directly to it and a 12 volt battery and it did operate. i also tried hooking it up to car power the way it is suppose to be hooked up and the pump would not work. i took the fuel line off the engine and started car to see if fuel would come out and no fuel came out. so i know pump work but why want the car turn on the pump. i wanted to see if the car would fire up if i could get gas to the engine so i hook my 12 volt battery up to the fuel pump and circulated fuel through the engine. but the engine still would not even act like it wanted to fire up. i figure by me doing this it would make the car fire up a little but would cut off or just fir a little. i am guessing that something is keeping the fuel pump from powering up and also something is keeping my car from firing.

    hello,
the fuel pump is a new one, and the pump is doing its job because i hot wired my 12 volt battery to it and it started pumping. the fuel pump will not work when i hook it up to the wires on the car at the fuel tank. so i know fuel pump is good but there is something else that will not let the fuel pump activate when hook up to the car wires at fuel tank. what else should i look at works with the pump to activate it?
when i get home i will try to see if the car is firing by taking a plug wire off and having my wife turning the key to see if a blue spark is coming out of it..

It can be faulty fuel pump relay. the fuel pump relay would go out or a circuit feeding through that same fuel pump relay will be shorted and prevent the relay from working. As a temporary fix and to see if this is the problem, you can replace this relay with another you have in there just to see if it starts. Look under the dash towards the left of the steering wheel (sometimes there is a cover blocking it) and look for a large relay labeled 409. These relays have like 4 or 5 large metal tabs and like 8 smaller ones. Pull it out and look for another one nearby (i believe it has the number 100 on it) that is smaller but has only about 4 or 5 large tabs but a similar foot print to the 409 and insert it into the space where the 409 relay was located at. Try to see if you can start the car and if so, you can check the relay or there is a possible short somewhere. ------ As you mentioned that fuel pump has been replaced and it has proper voltage. So the relay has to be checked. The other problem can be the pcm.The relay ground wire is connected to PCM and if the ground wire is dirty or not got connected then it can be the problem ,the other possibility can be the issue with PCM.If its not giving command to relay then fuel pump will not turn on. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

The fuel pump is ofcourse not doing its job. Have you checked up the spark in the spark plugs? It should be blue spark for the engine to fire up. If there is fuel and spark the engine has to start. As it is and old engine give it some time and effort to start behaving. Initially try to gravity feed the fuel. Let the engine start first then we will take care of the pump. One thing at a time. Please ensure that the fuel is reaching the carb or whatever it has. and also the spark in the plugs. Once it starts with gravity feed then you can concentrate on the pump. All the best.

I put used engine in 08 chevy Equanox Junk yard gave me 05 it wont start help

Fuel, compression and spark.

Check the above. If you have adequate fuel pressure, reasonable compression and a good spark the engine should start. It may also be a good idea to check for compatibility with your engine control module between a 2008 model year and the 2005 model years.

Where to find a engine oil stick to replace

The way I have done this is to go to a junk yard or a salvage yard and find a year, make, and model that matches, and then buy a used one.
Another way is to find a friend who has your year, make, and model, and borrow theirs and using a tape measure, measure the length and the hash marks for oil level, then find one in a junk yard that is too long, and cut it off, and remark the oil level hash marks.
God bless your efforts.

Depends on whether you want new or used, the engine compartment fuse box or the cabin fuse box. www.car-parts.com A junk yard in Elgin, IL has 2 cabin fuse boxes for $125-150. As for the engine compartment fuse boxes there is a long list of junk yards with prices between $100-200.

97 dodge intrepid fuel pump

you should not have to prime the fuel pump. just install it and turn your ignition key to the start position. You may have to turn the ignition key several times but once it starts, the car should start normally after that.

ENGINE TURNS OVER BUT WILL NOT START WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE

Is there a check engine light?

Sensors. Use a code reader of a jumper to read codes from your check engine light. Here's some help.
http://www.2carpros.com/kpages/first_things.htm

No check engine light.

Fuel pump or fuel filter. Try to start it, then pull a spark plug and see if you have gas on the plug or just the smell of gas. If you do it probably OK. If you don't, a new fuel filter, then a pump.

Ignition coil, Igniter or Distributor. Pull a spark plug and plug it back into it's spark plug wire. Turn over the motor and see if there's spark. You might need a helper or do it at night. There should be a small blue spark in the spark plug gap. Don't touch it. No spark...bad.
A lot of Toyotas use the same igniter so they are cheap at the junk yard and easy to fix.
Some distributors have the coil in them, some are do not. Check the external coil for spark. If there is none replace it. There are tests that can be made, but you need a book for that. A 1994 Camry probably has miles on it ,so anything you replace is good for an old car. Just don't buy from the dealer. You can get deals on line or at a junk yard.

Replacing the Exhaust Pipe

Why would you not go to the auto parts store, buy what you need, return home and install it yourself.

You must have lost your mind,if you think that a junk yard exhaust system is anything but rusted metal.
