Question about Mitsubishi Eclipse

1 Answer

Took off the battery cables to clean and not my car won't idle. Its been a month and still won't idle. Sometimes it is fine when I first start the car but after a mile I have to keep the gas pressed so the car won't die when at a stop light or going under 5 mph. .

Sounds like the battery terminal connections are not good but you mention cleaning so you either have a corrosion prob or take good care of these connections.

I'd lean toward a sensor not working and possibly got shorted out with your battery disconnect/connect. The IAC causes most idle problems but maybe you inadvertently did something else you are looking over.

#1 Check your ground or corrosion at battery terminals if OK try adding an additional ground strap or cable to body of vehicle make sure you clean surface that means remove paint where cable is grounded.

#2 If you have an aftermarket radio or sound system or anything aftermarket that is not original check that also.

Very important if terminals are not corroded splice both batt cables about 1" back and inspect under insulator for corrosion if there is any replace batt cables

The engine in the Bonneville is known to have problems with the intake manifold, this can cause poor idle and sometimes a smell. The pipe from the EGR valve causes the plastic next to it to melt, sometimes coolant can get into the intake. This needs to be looked at as soon as possible, because water getting into the cylinders can cause major damage.

Starts...won't start...not battery, not starter, not alternator. Just clicks when turn key. Some safety start disable???

Mine did the same thing. After having the batt checked and being assured there was nothing wrong with it I went "old school" and pulled and cleaned the batt cable ends. Also cleaned the connections just downstream from the ends as they were easy to get to. Haven't had a starting problem in 8 months now so must have found something. Hope this helps ya . Sometimes we get so wound in in high tech that forget the KISS system of troubleshooting.

Check your starter solenoid. Sometimes the wires loosen, or the solenoid just goes bad. Check to make sure all wires are firmly attached. Hope this helps.

In park the engine dies; only will run if given gas

It sounds like there is a problem with the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Its job is to open and let air into the manifold when the throttle is closed at idle. If it does not open, the engine dies at idle. The IAC is mounted on the throttle body. Possibly the valve is clogged or stuck, in which case it could be ok again if it is removed and cleaned. Or it is broken, and needs to be replaced. Or, there is a problem with its electrical connection, that needs to be traced. Good luck, let me know if you have any questions.

The throttle body needs cleaning. It has some carbon build up, and when the battery went dead the computer lost its learned values, one of which is base throttle position. Now its reset back to factory specs, not accounting for a dirty throttle body. Seen it a million times
