Question about 1992 Saturn SL

1 Answer

The Radiator was replaced on my car. The radiator was not the saturn specific and the tempperature sensor seems to be be just pressed against the radiator. The car will come up to temperature but the fan never kicks on. I dont have problems with it overheating according to the gauge but worry that because the gauge is not in the water of the radiator that it will damage the motor. is it supposed to be outside or inside and is ther any possible way to know if the engine is running too hot???

One sure fire way is to put a thermometer in the radiator while car is idling and see how high it climbs. Anything over 210 I would start to worry.

Tempperature stays on cold does not move

You should feel upper radiator hose to see if its even getting warm at all
If thermostat is stuck open then it will hardly even move
If it feels warm to the touch then its probably a defective coolant temp sender
Most of the time its a one wire connector located near thermostat
If so you can ground that wire to see if gauge moves
If it moves toward hot then just replace the sensor
I need to know which engine and I can give you specific instructions on how to test that circuit and even location of sensor

Need manual for,or, info on overheating radiator,(radiator light comes on) but radiator is full, no leaks, and thermstat seems to be opening/closing. ?????????

If the thermostat is good and the radiator is full the only thing left is the water pump. I recommend the Haynes repair manual for addressing the replacement of the water pump.

The radiator fan is working fine but the temperature sensor i dont know its locationmy car start overheating sometimes i need help.

The best way to get the exact location for the Temp sensor would be the Haynes Repair manual. As far as your overheating issue goes I would replace the Thermostat and see if that resolves the issue. Make sure the radiator has the correct amount of antifreeze in it.

My 1999 Saturn does the exact same thing

The radiator fan is not spinning. Car overheats when idling with no air flowing through the radiator fins.

When you are driving, there is enough air flowing through the radiator fins to keep the Saturn cool.

1. Check the radiator fan (cooling fan) fuse.
2. Check the radiator fan electrical connector. It may have vibrated loose.
3. *sigh* .. replace fan motor....

If you need instructions on how to replace fan motor , please comment.
Just don't let the fan scrape against the radiator when you are removing / rfeplacing the motor.

Hope this helps ... and it's just a fuse.

Radiator warning light

Check your over flow canister.Sometimes if it is a little low it will make the light flash or come on.When the motor cools off Try topping it off with some coolant. If level is at or above operating level the the sensor itself might be sticking or you may have some air pockets in the system. You can also tap on the sensor which should be the only one on the radiator tank,(a two wire sensor) that may be sticking..If it still keeps coming on you may need to change that sensor..

Radiator

I am not a mechanic but I had a problem with my radiator and I bought the Haynes Repair manual for the Saturn S-series 1991 thru 2002. It can be changed in about an hour and the procedure seems simple. But the only problem seem to me that you have to drain the radiator from the bottom which requires you to raise the vehicle up.
