Question about 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Truck

3 Answers

My 2001 Dodge RAM 3500 quad cab diesel has an a problem with the tachometer. My wife will hear a small click and it will start working again. Also, an odd occurrence, the heated seats stop working when the tach goes off, come back on when the tach starts working again. Is this a problem with a wire, fuse, or maybe an electronic module?

Also, the check engine light came on when this problem started, and has remained on.

The check engine light came on when this problem started, and has stayed on despite the occasional instance of the tach working fine. Also, the truck runs great, no issues there, weird. I work at a chevy dealer in sales, I'll ask my service department if they can pull them out, thanks.

2001 Dodge Ram 3500, Quad Cab, 5.9L Diesel, Dually, Automatic with 115K miles.

    - Check engine light came on, and now stays on.
    - Trucks runs fine, no difference in performance.
    - Tachometer stops working for awhile then comes on other times, and works fine.
    - The truck has leather and heated seats, when the tach goes off, a small click is heard in the dash, and also the heated seats won't work.
    - when tach comes back on heated seats work.

Any suggestions on how to fix this other than getting codes scanned at dealership?

Thank you. My wife has a habit of leaving the windows open which might also have let moisture into the door panel. I'll check the relay box too.

If the fuse is bad it will not work completely.I think there are may be broken wire.As they come into contact it starts working and cuts out to stop it.

If the check engine light is On please perform a scan in anauthorised service centre.

Most autozone shop does the scanning for free..

The error codes retrived through scanning will exxactly tell you the fault.

  • srome978 Aug 25, 2010

That's a great idea. We don't have an Autozone locally, but there are others such as Shucks, and many NAPA stores. I reviewed the electrical schematic and couldn't find any link between heated seats and the tach. It's probably not related.

I agree, the logical thing to do regardless is to get the darn truck scanned for codes, thanks.

The heated seats works off one relay to power the seat grids to heat. I would check for any water leaks or moister build up in the relay box area. Moister will do funny things to the circuitry of any vehicle. I once has a 76 LeSabre that had the old style glass fuses. One had moister in it. For two weeks by battery kept draining and did not know why till I found this fuse with water inside of it. After removing the fuse and replacing it with a new one my battery never did lose a charge again

Hi,

I have looked at the symptoms you have described and it would seem that you have a fault with your power control circuit or module.

The only way to narrow this down is to get a workshop to check for any fault codes which will allow me to narrow this down for you.

This problem could be as simple as a loose connection or as complicated as having to reprogram the Power Control Module.

The easiest and fastest way to find this fault is to get the fault codes out.

Hope this helped, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason
