Question about 1987 Ford F 150

1 Answer

87 F150, runs for a couple of minutes and then stops running. Acts like it's not getting fuel. I pulled the fuel line after the filter and it was holding pressure. Has new fuel filter and idle regulator. Will not restart with out sitting for a while. I can hear fuel pump getting pressurized when key is turned to "on"

After it quits, check for spark. This could be a problem with the igntion system, the ignition module to be more specific.

Curious, have you tried pulling any codes from the vehicle? Here is a video on an issue that is common, though it causes more of a misfire and hesitation then a lack of fuel feel:

Fuel engine stops then start up in 1 min

You probably have an electronic ignition system to go with those fuel injectors. It sounds like it runs just long enough to empty the fuel out of the injectors, which means there might be a vacuum problem. I'm a carburetor person myself. Are you sure it sound like it NEEDS gas or could it be flooding?

do not use starting fluid. pull the line off from the fuel filter (line comming from the tank). put the line in a bucket and have someone turn the key a few times. if there is good flow replace the fuel filter, if not replace the fuel pump

Ford F-150 starting problem

replace the fuel regulator, its about a $50.00 part and takes about 15 minutes to change, but first relieve the fuel pressure and you can do it in a couple of ways, hitting the fuel pump shut off swith(inertia switch)until the red button pops up,but remember to reset it when done, located either behind the passengers side kick panel or under the carpet in the middle under the dash then start it to run it out of gas which there will still be a little bit in the lines,...or drain it at the valve to check for pressure it looks like a valve stem for a tire.
