Question about 1999 Ford Expedition

A diagnostic test showed I have both System Lean Bank 1 and System Lean Bank 2. There is also a burning smell coming from the passenger side of the engine that started when the check engine light came on. What could be wrong? If I don't get it addressed soon, will it do much damage to my Expedition? Thanks.

CHECK THE PCV HOSE ON PASS SIDE OF ENGINE FOR VACUMN LEAKS WHICH WILL CAUSE THIS CONCERN

Could be a number of thing's , vacuum leak , clogged injector , O2 sensor problem . Having diagnostic knowledge an proper testing equipment is key to finding problems like this . Looking at fuel trims on a scan tool that shows engine management system data . Do you know what short an long term fuel trims are ? Looking at O2 sensor data , are they switching normally ? Is the front O2 on bank 1 stuck lean ?

2000 navigator system too lean


Too Lean on which Bank of the Motor?

To have a lean O2 Code --you could have a rich fuel
condition & the pcm drove the fuel trim lean

Next you could have a vacuum leak-in the intake or exhaust system

Third you could have a failed O2 Sensor

Front or Upstream Oxygen Sensors get replaced at 100,000 miles

The front sensors are on the exhaust pipe between the motor &
the converter.

Will need a long handled flex head O2 Sensor Wrench

Had the same problem an old hose had a hole in it. changed hose,problem solved. also bank 1 is passenger side. i have a 2000 jaguar stype.

DTC P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1)
Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

Note: This DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is very similar to P0174, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.

I would suggest that you take a look at the front oxygen sensor. Typically speaking the oxygen sensor causes this code to appear. Here is the possible cause list from the manual for your car.

Trouble Code: P0171 - Fuel System Lean (Bank 1)

Possible Causes:
Air leaks in intake manifold, exhaust pipes or exhaust manifold
Base engine mechanical problem causing a lean A/F condition
Fuel control Sensor is out of calibration (e.g., ECT, IAT or MAP)
Fuel delivery component fault (clogged filter, low fuel pressure)
O2 element is contaminated, deteriorated or it has failed
Vacuum hose is disconnected, broken, leaking or loose

The computer show's 02 sensor bank 2 stuck and to lean, which one is it their are 4 of them on this truck


bank 1 sensor 1 is driver side exhaust pipe in front of catalytic converter, bank 1 sensor 2 is drivers side exhaust pipe behind catalytic converter, bank 2 sensor 1 is passenger side exhaust pipe in front of catalytic converter, bank 2 sensor 2 is passenger side exhaust pipe behind catalytic converter.

SES light on code P0171, 2005 Xterra, what to do??


P0171 is a lean oxygen sensor code for bank 1 on your engine.
It indicates that there is a lean condition (engine not getting enough
fuel or getting too much air) on that side of your engine.
Bank 1 is always the side of the engine where #1 cylinder is
located. In your case it is front-most cylinder on the right side
of the engine. (As viewed from the driver's seat)
So bank one is the passenger side.

If there are any other engine control codes, you need to fix those
first, as they may be the cause of the lean condition.

If that is the only code you are getting, then diagnostic testing
needs to be performed to determine the actual cause of the problem.

Possible causes are:

* Intake air / vacuum leaks
* Faulty / dirty fuel injector(s)
* Incorrect fuel pressure (Likely to cause both P0171 and P0174 at the same time)
* Low fuel volume (Pressure OK) (restricted fuel filter,etc.)
* Fauly Mass Airflow Sensor
* incorrect PCV hose connection
* Exhaust gas leaks
* Faulty Air Fuel Ratio Sensor

2003 Ford Ranger 4x4 extended cab- diagnostics checked and got these codes- P0171, P0174, P0300, P0316. Can you tell me what they mean?


P0171------ system too lean bank#1
Po174------ system too lean bank#2
For these 2 codes, try cleaning the maf sensor (mass air flow), that is mounted in the big black hose that goes from the air filter housing to the throttle plate, if it is dirty, that will cause those 02 sensors to send a signal to the computor to lean the air fuel mixture. If cleaning it doesn't work, the sensors will probably need changing.
P0300---- Random/multiple cylinder misfire
P0316---- Cylinder misfire at start up---- first 100 revolutions.
On those 2 codes, you have to do some testing to find out why there is a misfire.
Possible causes:
dirty/malfunctioning injectors
weak coil pack
fowling spark plugs/wires
Low fuel pressure

p1133 - o2 sensor, Insufficiant Switching, Bank 1 Sensor 1.
p0131 - o2 sensor circuit, low voltage, bank 1 sensor 1
p0171 - Lean condition, Bank 1
p0300 - Random Misfire

I would be looking at the front passenger side oxygen sensor for issues. It may be bad, it may not be plugged in, bad wiring at harness.

The random misfire may be symptomatic of the o2 sensor problem.
