Question about 1991 Volvo 740

I have a 91 volvo 740 I am having a problem with the transmission possibly. Its an automatic with only about 150k miles. It starts and takes off in 1st and 2nd but is sluggish and feels like its switching gears really rough. It seems to get stuck trying to go in to 3rd. The rpms will go up to 21/2 or 3 and then it stays in 2nd. After driving for a while it eventually will jump into 3rd but it feels rough. I know its bad to go over a certain speed in second so im worried it will ruin my trany if i drive it like this too long. I just want to know what is the cheapest way to remedy this without spending a large sum of money.

Check the oil level of the transmission
that transmission does have an overdrive relay
that relay may be faulty

get the transmission serviced and if found in bad condition
cheapest fix is
source a good used automatic transmission and have that fitted in


cost of a full rebuild on these transmission is more than the volvo is worth
its a lot of km./miles
sounds like the third /overdrive part of the transmission
is slipping or worn

Run the engine til hot, check the transmission fluid... If it is dark/dirty red and smells bad, it needs to be changed. If it hasnt been changed in your knowledge in the last 40,000 miles, change it anyway. If that doesnt fix it and the fluid was very smelly even after u changed it and ran it for an hour on the road, the trans may have to be rebuilt. There are some treatments you can add and many do work well, so go to autozone or Napa and check em out. I would recommend high mileage additives anyway if the mileage is high as you'll get more life out of the transmissio...hope that helps...if so rate me..

It may be a faulty relay - usually behind the radio - it makes a clicking sound when you hit the button on the shift lever. Or it may be the overdrive solinoid which is mounted on the top of the tranny. Check all of your connestions first. One other thing - the wire from the shift lever overdrive button to the overdrive solenoid on the tranny may run over the top of the drive shaft - check for wear

No, no such animal. Trans oil needs a means of ck'ing. lokk for a dipstick more to the rear of the engine close to the firewall.

Could be that there is a clog at the tank-there is a screen there- can be accessed through access panel behind rear seat- also try taking off fuel line at engine and starting engine--if there is fuel present then I would rule out the tank screen problem. Good luck--let me know if that helps. C

Start by checking the automatic transmission fluid level hot. You may want to take this to a local Volvo dealer to have the transmission serviced first.

Usually when the transmission slips, shifts rough, is noisy or has no drive in forward or reverse gears this indicates that the fluid pressure is low. When the transmission is serviced the oil is drained, the screen/filter is changed, the magnets cleaned and the pan cleaned as well. Dirt can clog the screen, which is a filter that is designed to trap particles that would otherwise damage the unit. The magnets are designed to trap metal shavings before they can contaminate the oil.

If this fails to correct the issue, the clutch packs could be worn out inside the transmission itself. These are the friction plates that actually perform shifting duties. The other possibility is that the torque converter or its pump is worn, resulting in low line pressure. Although replacement is possible, consider a rebuilt unit before repairing - the cost of installation of a rebuilt unit is usually about the same for repair of these types of problems. The result will be a vehicle that is both reliable and long lasting.

88 volvo 740 needs trans fluid where does it go in


the transmission fluid on the B230f engine with automatic transmission (Volvo 240, 740, 940), goes into the filler neck with the large yellow dipstick. it is located about 5 inches below the oil dipstick. good luck :)

Hello. i have owned many 740's, 240's, 122's, and 850's. I have done my fair share of transmission swaps. The transmission tag is located right above the trans-oil pan and directly below the od seloind on the drivers-side. if your volvo 740 is a non-turbo, the transmission is AW-70L, if it is a turbo-model then it is AW-71L. That specific transmission is known for failure. Sometimes it's premature failure (in your case) and sometimes they have 150k miles, but that specific automatic transmission will always fail.
There are plenty of stories online about premature failure of the 01M VW transmission...

1991 volvo 740 will shift out of 4th gear at around 100km/hr and wont shift back


This is a standard shift I am presuming if so this usually indicates a bad synchronizer in the transmission. if it is an automatic trans. it is a speed sensor malfuctioning.
