Transmission rear seal instalation

remove the drive shaft ( tail shaft) lever out the old seal. put sealer around new seal and fit back in extension housing. Use something that is the same size as the outer edge of the seal and tap it in flush with the edge of the transmission housing. Expect some oil to drain out when the tail shaft and seal is removed

Rear transmission seal

When replacing a rear transmission seal or other seals, use a piece of wood and a hammer.Replacs the new seal by tapping the wood all around the seal so it goes in evenly. This way is doesn't damage the new seal and you have better control of the install.

How to replace a rear main seal in a 2001 chevy 2500

several things, the rear main seal is accessable by removing the transmission. if this vehicle is standard transmission, then would recomend new clutch at this time given the amount of labor involved. if automatic, remove drive shafts, transfer case, transmission, and flexplate ....replace rear main. approx 5 hrs.

How do I change and replace the transmission seal and filter. How do I know if I need to replace the head gaskets.

The rear transmission seal can be changed without pulling the transmission. The front seal requires the transmission to be separated from the engine. To change the rear seal you take off the drive line and use a seal puller. Head gaskets need to be replaced if you find water in the oil, have an overheating engine that runs rough or if the coolant smells like gas. One way to tell is to do a compression check on all cylinders.

Leaking transmission fluid

replace the seal. can be 1 of 2 output shaft seals or the torque converter seal... pray its not the torque seal as it takes about 5 hrs for an experienced mechanic :)

it could also be a transmission cooling line. this is not so bad to replace but the quick connects on the radiator can be a pain

Transmission fluid leaking from front of transmission as soon as the motor is started. the bell housing cover is missing and the fluid is on the flywheel. I cannot offer more detail at this time. My...

That is going to be a front main seal on the transmission if you're sure it's transmission fluid or a rear main seal of the engine if it's engine oil. I put that in here just in case you weren't positive it's transmission fluid. Either way the transmission will have to come out to replace either of those seals.

Rear main seal leaks..does this affect transmission??

A leaking rear main seal will not cause your transmission to leak.

The transmission has its own seal and should not leak because of the engine rear main seal.

Due to the labor involved in replacing the rear main seal on the engine, it is best if you replace the front transmission seal at the same time if possible.

Installation varies on different vehicles but the principles are the same.
