Question about 2001 Ford F350 Super Duty SuperCab
If the starter canbe encouraged to start by hitting the outside of the starter then it needs a bit of an overhaul. Remove the starter/starter solenoid assembly, dismantle and inspect the heavy duty electrical copper striker plates that the motor armature makes contact with to draw full current. If worn/burnt down replace them. There are kits for this job and it is much cheaper than getting a new motor. Try not to lube everything when reassembling, it is a temptation but it can lead to dirt build up and starter failure in the future.

I have also suffered this problem. The starter motor has a component called BENDEX. It is the part that pushes the starting pinion forward and backward so that it engages with the flywheel when you want to start. And when you release the starter, it retracts the pinion and it disengages from the flywheel. As the flywheel is much larger than the pinion, if it does not disengage the starter motor will get burnt as it would be subjected to a very high RPM by the flywheel. So, get the bendex repaired. If it can not be repaired for some reason then replace with a new one.
