There should be tension pully on it one of the pullys should have a slot in it for a ratchet to lock in and it will give slack to pull the belt off.

I run a repair shop, every time this has happened it has been because either the belt is wrong, or the belt (multi-groove type) is not in the pulley grooves properly. Try installing your old belt again just to see if you're doing something wrong, and if it goes on as it should, you need a new parts guy.

2005 ?? and only 70k ,i dont think it needs changing yet till about 120k depending on your local ambient climate ,if in a hot dry area then 7 yrs old yes change but if in a more temperate climate then it will be good for at least till its 10 yrs old ,modern belts are far superior to older ones from the 90s ,Then entrust it to a mechanic because one slip up can ruin the engine ,i would not recomend this job to a weekend mechanic who needs to ask on here how to do it ,yes i can tell you and its not difficult but the consequences of making a mistake ??

Most vehicles have a belt routing diagram sticker under the hood. If you do not have one, make a drawing of how the belt goes on before removing the old one. There will be whats called a tentioner pulley. Usually you can use a ratchet and socket to loosen the tention. It is spring loaded so watch your fingers and slowly release pressure on your ratchet when you are ready. Remove the old belt and put the new one on.

Pretty simple fix... just did mine today. Before you start, do 2 things. 1. Remove the negative battery terminal for safety. 2. Make sure that you have a diagram available for the proper belt routing for your engine. If not, draw it up on a piece of paper.

Use a wrench or rachet / socket to rotate the tensioner pulley clockwise until you can slip the old belt off. Snake the old belt around the fan and discard it.

Check all pulleys for embedded gunk and clean as necessary. While not absolutely necessary, I recommend changing both the idler and tensioner pulleys- especially if you're changing the belt due to chirping or sqeaking. Autozone has the belt, tensioner pulley assembly and idler pulley for ~$110.

If changing the pulleys, just remove the single bolt that retains each pulley and replace the old ones w/ new.

Reverse the procedure for belt removal when installing the new one. Be very mindful of the routing and make sure that the belt is seated completely in the correct grooves of each pulley.

Put the negative battery cable back on and bump the starter a few times to be sure that the belt is tracking properly. Start it up and take pride in a job well done. Took me approximately 1 hour including pulley cleaning.

Good luck- by the way, my local Ford dealer wanted $360 to do this job.

How to change a serpentine belt?


Make a diagram of how it is threaded.

Move the tensioner back so that it is not producing belt tension. Sometimes the alternator or power steering pump are used as the tensioner.

Remove the old belt.

Thread the new belt onto the pulleys in the same way the old one was on.

Allow the tensioner to push on the belt once again, or tension the belt by moving the alternator or power steering pump, if that is how your belt is tensioned.

Make sure when threading the new belt on that you get the grooves on the belt fully onto the grooved pulleys — it isn't too har to miss by one groove, and that is really hard on the belt.

Loosen the tensioner pulley to remove the belt. It is the one that has a long bolt running through it. Once you remove the old belt, install the new one using the appropriate diagram from the above two links. Readjust the tension using the bolt you loosened to remove the old belt.

I changed the serpentine belt and now there is a humming noise


If you've double checked to make sure belt on properly, you'll have to identify which wheel (pulley) is making noise and check it for any debris that may have built up on it, or possibility of bearing failure in that part. Was it not noticeable with old belt, or was old belt pretty noisy, and that's why it was changed?

S-belt


Your local mechanic would be able to change the belt for you, it is not an expensive repair. If you are going to attempt the job yourself ensure you look at the configuration before removing the old belt, I would suggest you draw yourself a picture of the set up before removing the old belt. When you have removed the old belt spin the pulleys to ensure you dont have a noisy one causing the problem. Be sure to have the correct tools before attempting the job. If you don't have the tools then it is not worth attempting the repair yourself.
