Unfortunately (and as you may have heard), these cars are notorious for head gasket problems. If so (happened to mine, too), needs engine work from an experienced mechanic. Shop around, but get quality work,

Thermostat.....water pump.....belt......fans....sensors...fuses.....relays.
start with the fuse, the run a wire from the battery to the fans if they run.it aint them.then change the fan sensor.then check the belt.keep going up the cost factor until you find it.

The car is over heating i put new thermostat

On my 1998 subaru legacy outback limited I replaced the thermostat and did a radiator flush and fill and it overheated when I tested it. It basically overheated because there was air in the system. I relieved it by running the car and partially unscrewing the black plastic relief screw on the top left of the radiator(looking at it from the front of the car) until it stopped hissing and fluid started coming out then I screwed it back tight and I've never had a problem since. I think subarus are pretty fussy with this because my mechanic even missed it when they did the head gaskets.

AWD went out in my 1998 Subaru Forester?

This recently happened to my 98 Subaru Legacy Outback.
My problem is in the rear differential. May be the same for you.
When making a turn, the car sounds like a Star Wars T.I.E. Fighter. The outside wheel is not turning fast enough to keep up with the inside wheel or vice versa. AWD is disengaged and car is currently operating on Front WD. I was told this is fine to drive this way.

I have a 99 subaru legacy outback trans slip

cheak your fluid level in your transmission as if it is low it wont go into gear properly you will move it from park or neutral to a gear it can take a while before it will kick into gear if you top up the fluid that should fix the problem if it still does it after this take it to a tranmission specalist and have it serviced as the bands may be streched
